Most studies of the 1857 Uprising look at the causes, the course of events, and the consequences. This edited volume takes a different approach. It goes before 1857 and focuses on the first half of the nineteenth century to look for the presence of long-term structural factors (if any) behind the momentous events of 1857. Several contributors have studied the late nineteenth century in order to understand the impact of the Uprising on Indian society and mentality. Spatially too the contributors to this volume go beyond India to locate 1857 within the emerging trend of global history. The essayists do not fall within any single school. The heterogeneous outlook of the contributors is indeed a strength of this volume as it widens the methodological traits and empirical base of essays. Hence, the 1857 Uprising (itself a neutral term) is considered by some contributors as a Sepoy Rebellion and for others it was an Indian Mutiny. Another contribution of this edited volume is a comprehensive bibliography that will help scholars in further research.

The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a rebellion in India against the rule of the British East India Company, that ran from May 1857 to July 1859. The rebellion began as a mutiny of sepoys of the East India Company's army on 10 May 1857, in the cantonment of the town of Meerut, and soon escalated into other mutinies and civilian rebellions largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, western Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to East India Company power in that region, and was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion has been known by many names, including the Indian Mutiny, India's First War of Independence, the Great Rebellion, the Indian Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857, the Rebellion of 1857, the Uprising of 1857, the Sepoy Rebellion, the Indian Insurrection, and the Sepoy Mutiny.

The rebellion led to the dissolution of the East India Company in 1858. It also led the British to reorganize the army, the financial system and the administration in India. The country was thereafter directly governed by the crown as the new British Raj. The 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot was a Line Infantry Regiment of the British Army from 1799 to 1881.

The British slowly and gradually snatched the political power of India from the Native rulers and on the pretext of moral improvement, the British Government adopted an intolerant religious policy, which led to the conversion from oriental religions to Christianity. Both Hindus and Muslims of this country began to feel that their religion was in danger, and particularly the Muslims due to their fanatical pride, and resented the Christian supremacy. Initially, the Indians resented the policies of the British Government and mobilized the civilians and militia through the famous chapati and lotus distribution. Finally, on 10th of May, the final rising exploded from Meerut which followed the long fight throughout North India. The titular Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar was enthroned in the Red Fort, and Delhi was made, once again, the capital of India. The entire history covered under different chapters of this book shows the real picture of the revolt. The whole topics are quite interesting, full of knowledge, and based on authentic sources with little hypothetical narrations.
