How do Israel's Scriptures inform the account of Jesus's cruciform death in the Gospel of John? What does it mean for John's portrayal of Jesus's death to be “according to the Scriptures”? The Use of the Jewish Scriptures in the Johannine Passion Narrative: That the Scripture May Be Perfected argues that they are the focal element of the Johannine portrayal, and without them, John's Passion Narrative simply makes no sense. Whether through the evangelist's appeal to the fulfilment of Scripture (with such fulfilment accompanying the very moment of Jesus's death) or whether through allusions to the narratives of Creation or Passover, Israel's Scriptures provide the Passion Narrative's veritable heartbeat. This book also considers the impact of John's scriptural usage on the very concept of Scripture itself, contending that Scripture is brought to perfection by Jesus's actions and to a new standing or status in this regard. David M. Allen examines how the use of Scripture in the Passion account impacts the Fourth Gospel's own self-understanding, arguing that its capacity to pronounce on Scripture's fulfilment attests to the Gospel's own self-avowed, scriptural credentials.

Scholars have long noted that comments by the author or editor, often referred to as “narrative asides” or “parentheses,” are frequent in the Fourth Gospel. The Function of Narrative Comments in the Gospel of John:A Literary and Linguistic Analysis is a comprehensive guide to this significant feature. In the vein of Gilbert Van Belle's Les Parenthèses dans L'Évangile de Jean (1985), Lamb provides a detailed analysis of the terminology, definition, and categorization of these comments, and interacts extensively with existing scholarship. He looks at the role of the comments in the Gospel's composition, assesses their function using insights from literary theory, dramatic theory, and sociolinguistics, and makes comparisons with OT historical writings, the Synoptic Gospels, and the works of Herodotus and Thucydides. He concludes that the narrative comments are an integral part of the text, which reflect the authority of the author, and that they have significant implications for our exegesis of the Gospel.

Catholic Press Association Award Winner The Gospel call to do justice has inspired Christians to practice justice throughout the centuries. Yet popular usage associates justice with the legal system, due process, or with fair treatment in ways that are not helpful to Christian practitioners and ministers of justice. When Love Is Not Enoughaddresses the practice of justice at the dawn of the new millennium through the lens of eight dilemmas that confront Christians in their daily efforts to do justice. After an initial description and analysis of these eight specific dilemmas that impact the Christian understanding and practice of justice, When Love Is Not Enough draws on the experience of practitioners of justice; the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures; Catholic Social Teachings; and contemporary theories of justice to develop a comprehensive approach to justice based on faith. Chapter one introduces the dilemmas in contemporary justice that reflect a theological, eschatological, sacramental, and ethical worldview. Chapter two traces the theological framework of justice through the experience of ministers and practitioners of justice. Chapter three looks at the theological framework of justice in the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, while chapter four examines the theological framework of justice in Catholic Social Teachings. Chapter five draws upon contemporary and classical theories of justice, showing justice as a historically evolving practice. Chapter six examines the anthropological, theological, and sacramental contexts for justice as participation in the human community. Chapter seven outlines how justice as participation in the human community is built around seven important points. The final chapter illustrates how justice as participation can sort out some just practices that respond to the eight initial dilemmas. Chapters are Contemporary Dilemmas of Justice," *Justice and its Theological Framework in the Experience of Ministers and Practitioners of Justice, - *Justice and its Theological Framework in the Hebrew and in the Christian Scriptures, - *Justice and its Theological Framework in Catholic Social Teachings, - *Contemporary, Classic Theories of Justice, - *The Contexts of Justice as Participation in the Human Community, - *Justice as Participation in the Human Community, - and *The Practice of Justice as Participation in the Human Community. - Mary Elsbernd, OSF, STD, is associate professor of pastoral studies in social ethics at Loyola University, Chicago. The elusive disposition of John's language has been noted by biblical scholars throughout the history of New Testament studies. The Fourth Gospel is seen as so simple to grasp and yet often pointing beyond itself and beckoning the reader to read deeper. Various socio-linguistic studies have explained this feature as the reflection of the sectarian tendencies in the Johannine Christianity. In his study Saeed Hamid-Khani questions these approaches as inadequate. In turn, he examines John's language within an exegetical and theological framework. He argues that the Sitz im Leben of Johannine language was an environment in which the Hebrew Scriptures were the dominant conceptual force for both the Jews and the Christians. In this context he argues that the essential function of John's enigmatic language is wedded to the Evangelist's purpose in writing the Gospel: namely a steadfast focus upon setting forth that Jesus is the Christ according to the witness of Israel's Scriptures. It is here in these echoes and thematic allusions to the Scriptures that we find the answer to the function and significance of John's unique language: i.e., Jesus is the Messiah, the Saviour of the world, and he is the visible image of the invisible God, the embodiment of the self-revelation of God according to the Scriptures. However, these truths are concealed from the undiscerning and are only revealed by the spirit of God to those who are born of God.

In The Fourth Gospel and the Scriptures, new insights from 4QXII manuscripts and the Minor Prophets Scroll help unlock the mystery of John’s unique form of scriptural citation. Focusing on 19:37, Bynum argues convincingly that John’s citation from Zechariah is both accurate and historically reliable. Carefully considering the biblical textual milieu of the era brings to light John’s concern for fidelity to the prominent Hebrew text of his day, and for the correctness of the Septuagint form of the citation. From this analysis new light is shed on the critical role the citation plays in the Johannine Passion Narrative, and its meaning within the theological development of the Fourth Gospel.
