My name is Ammanuel Tilahun, and I've got one hell of a story to share with you. I was born in 1298 A.D. in the City of Gondar, Ethiopia. In 1319, my father Adam Tilahun, a Knight of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, went out to fight the Vampires who invaded East Africa and returned as one of them. Papa turned me into a Vampire, and I've roamed the world as an Immortal blood drinker ever since. In 1987 in the City of Montreal, Quebec, I met college student and Haitian church leader Esther Polydor, and fell in love with her. I made her into a Vampire. The transformation changed Esther for the worst, and I had to stop her. Now, three decades later, Esther is back, and gunning for me and everyone I care about. An angry woman who absolutely cannot die, that's who I must now face. Heaven help me...

Born into a life of constant financial, physical, and moral threat, Meti Birabiro takes refuge in literature and the fantastic. Blue Daughter of the Red Sea is Birabiro’s poetic account of the harsh reality of her young life spread across three continents. Her voice is a fresh mélange of child and adult perspectives, at once brutally honest and wise beyond her years. Through her journey from Ethiopia to Italy and finally to the United States, we encounter Birabiro’s relatives, friends, and enemies—relationships so intense that these people become her vampires, devils, angels, and saints. These characterizations always lead her back to the truth, helping her to decipher what is fair and good, to understand what she must cherish and what she must rage against.

More than ten thousand years ago, a race called the Bitalo conquered the continent of Africa. They were something like vampires, something like African vampires. There is a quite a bit of sunshine in Africa. Do you know what that means? It means that the African vampires do not fear the sun. It means that the sun cannot save you from an African vampire. There are African vampires in the United States. They came to this country during the slave trade. Most of them look like ordinary African American people, but there are Bitalos in every race. African vampires do not like blood that much. To them it is like milk—good for their health. Some call them cannibal vampires or ghoul vampires because their main food is people. They like their food prepared in many ways—fried, baked, barbequed, and ground like hamburgers. There are quite a few African vampires in the United States. Now they are planning to take over the United States. Somebody has got to stop them. John Irungu has killed quite a few Bitalos, but he is a very old man now, and he is becoming senile. Also, there would seem to be very few Irungu Knights left. But John Irungu has a much younger friend named John David Hunter, also known as the Preacher. The preacher just might be a natural-born Irungu Knight. He just might be the Chosen One. Bitalo prophecy warns them of the coming of a man who could destroy them. He would be a descendant of Curtis Jore, the man of war, the man who destroyed their ancient vampire. Could this preacher be the Chosen One?

On every continent and in every nation, animals unrecognized by modern science are reported on a daily basis. People passionately pursue these creatures--the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals. When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent past...what makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected." This reference work presents a "flesh and blood" view of cryptozoology. Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example. Appendices offer a timeline of zoological discoveries, annotated lists of movies and television series with cryptozoological themes, a list of crypto-fiction titles and a list of Internet websites devoted to cryptozoology.

Between the years 1964 and 1974, Ethiopian post-secondary students studying at home, in Europe, and in North America produced a number of journals. In these they explored the relationship between social theory and social change within the project of building a socialist Ethiopia. Ethiopia in Theory examines the literature of this student movement, together with the movement’s afterlife in Ethiopian politics and society, in order to ask: what does it mean to write today about the appropriation and indigenisation of Marxist and mainstream social science ideas in an Ethiopian and African context; and, importantly, what does the archive of revolutionary thought in Africa teach us about the practice of critical theory more generally?

During the colonial period, Africans told each other terrifying rumors that Africans who worked for white colonists captured unwary residents and took their blood. In colonial Tanganyika, for example, Africans were said to be captured by these agents of colonialism and hung upside down, their throats cut so their blood drained into huge buckets. In Kampala, the police were said to abduct Africans and keep them in pits, where their blood was sucked. Luise White presents and interprets vampire stories from East and Central Africa as a way of understanding the world as the storytellers did. Using gossip and rumor as historical sources in their own right, she assesses the place of such evidence, oral and written, in historical reconstruction. White conducted more than 130 interviews for this book and did research in Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. In addition to presenting powerful, vivid stories that Africans told to describe colonial power, the book presents an original epistemological inquiry into the nature of historical truth and memory, and into their relationship to the writing of history.

Finding it could cost them everything. Wielding it could mean their end. It’s a secret lost in time, a myth among immortals, a relic of such power that vampires around the world have quietly harbored the hope that it doesn’t really exist. It’s a mystery that Tenzin and Ben cannot resist. But to obtain the Bone Scroll, they’ll need leverage over the most powerful and mercurial vampire in the known world. Saba, oldest of immortals and mother of the vampire race, has returned to her homeland in the highlands of Ethiopia, searching for the scroll with a cadre of elders. In order to outsmart them, Ben and Tenzin will need to walk a literal and figurative edge through a maze of vampire loyalties, shadowy motivations, and ancient secrets. If Saba wanted them gone, she could command the earth to swallow them whole. But the mother of vampires is playing her own game, and both Ben and Tenzin are no more than pawns. Can they outsmart and outmaneuver the most primeval beings in their race to find the Bone Scroll before it lands in the possession of those who care only for their own selfish gain? The Bone Scroll is the next supernatural mystery in the Elemental Legacy series by Elizabeth Hunter, USA Today bestselling author of the Elemental Mysteries, the Irin Chronicles, and the Glimmer Lake series.
