Most people still view the final, bloody confrontation between Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee as a relentless grinding away of the Army of Northern Virginia in a continuous battle of attrition, attributing Grant's victory not to his generalship but to his overwhelming superiority in numbers. General Andrew A. Humphreys (1810–1883), chief of staff of the Army of the Potomac and later the fiery commander of the Second Corps, provides readers with a far more enlightened understanding in The Virginia Campaign, 1864 and 1865. Humphreys was known for his high military scholarship, conspicuous courage, and remarkable coolness in combat. Joshua Chamberlain hailed him as "the accomplished, heroic soldier, the noble and modest man."In The Virginia Campaign, Humphreys examines the strategy, battles, and consequences from the detached perspective of a historian intimately acquainted with his material. Especially valuable is his clear dissection of alternative plans of campaign. For readers seeking concise accounts of, and insightful analyses into, the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor, the siege of Petersburg, the capture of Richmond, and the surrender of Lee's army, this volume in the landmark Campaigns of the Civil War series more than fulfills the requirements.

Excerpt from Gettysburg Campaign and Campaigns of 1864-1865 in Virginia "War of the Rebellion." "Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" furnishes the material upon which the history of the campaigns of that war must be based. Whilst in this compilation the official reports and correspondence of the Union armies are very full and complete, it is to be regretted that much of those of the Confederate armies were destroyed or lost. If, in the Records, the Confederate reports and correspondence were as complete as those of the Union army, the historian would find in that compilation the material for history complete, systematically arranged, and accessible to every one. As it is, enough of the records of the Confederate armies have been preserved in it, when carefully compared with the records of the Union armies, to preclude the possibility of going far astray. In the Records, the campaigns are arranged in separate volumes, and each volume is divided into two parts. Part I contains the official reports, written after the close of the campaign, or of the engagement, and after careful comparisons and consideration of all the res gestae available at the time. When the name of the writer is known, a reference to the index of Part I of the volume is all that is necessary to find a copy of the original document. The Final Battles Of The Petersburg Campaign written by A. Wilson Greene and has been published by Univ. of Tennessee Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Petersburg (Va.) categories.

The Petersburg Campaign was what finally did it. After months of relentless conflict throughout 1864, the Confederate army led by General Robert E. Lee holed up in the Virginia city of Petersburg as Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's vastly superior forces lurked nearby. The brutal fighting that took place around the city during 1864 and into 1865 decimated both armies as Grant used his manpower advantage to repeatedly smash the Confederate lines, a tactic that eventually resulted in the decisive breakthrough that ultimately doomed the Confederacy. The breakthrough and the events that led up to it are the subject of A. Wilson Greene's groundbreaking book The Final Battles of the Petersburg Campaign, a significant revision of a much-praised work first published in 2000. Surprisingly, despite Petersburg's decisive importance to the war's outcome, the campaign has received scant attention from historians. Greene's book, with its incisive analysis and compelling narrative, changes this, offering readers a rich account of the personalities and strategies that shaped the final phase of the fighting. Greene's ultimate focus on the climatic engagements of April 2, 1865, the day that Confederate control of Richmond and Petersburg was effectively ended. The book tells this story from the perspectives of the two army groups that clashed on that day: the Union Sixth Corps and the Confederate Third Corps. But Greene does more than just recount the military tactics at Petersburg; he also connects the reader intimately with how the war affected society and spotlights the soldiers, both officers and enlisted men, whose experiences defined the outcome. Thanks to his extensive research and consultation of rare source materials, Greene gives readers a vibrant perspective on the campaign that broke the Confederate spirit once and for all. A. Wilson Greene is president of Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier near Petersburg, Virginia. He also has taught at Mary Washington College and worked for sixteen years with the National Park Service.
