A Place More Void takes its name from a scene in William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, wherein an elderly soothsayer has a final chance to warn Caesar about the Ides of March. Worried that he won’t be able to deliver his message because of the crowded alleyways, the soothsayer devises a plan to find and intercept Caesar in “a place more void.” It is precisely such an elusive place that this volume makes space for by theorizing and empirically exploring the many yet widely neglected ways in which the void permeates geographical thinking. This collection presents geography’s most in-depth and sustained engagements with the void to date, demonstrating the extent to which related themes such as gaps, cracks, lacks, and emptiness perforate geography’s fundamental concepts, practices, and passions. Arranged in four parts around the themes of Holes, Absences, Edges, and Voids, the contributions demonstrate the fecundity of the void for thinking across a wide range of phenomena: from archives to alien abductions, caves to cryptids, and vortexes to vanishing points. A Place More Void gathers established and emerging scholars who engage a wide range of geographical issues and who express themselves not only through archival, literary, and socio-scientific investigations, but also through social and spatial theory, political manifesto, poetry, and performance art.

The “formidably brilliant” Žižek considers sexuality, ontology, subjectivity, and Marxian critiques of political economy by way of Lacanian psychoanalysis. If the most interesting theoretical interventions emerge today from the interspaces between fields, then the foremost interspaceman is Slavoj Žižek. In Incontinence of the Void (the title is inspired by a sentence in Samuel Beckett's late masterpiece Ill Seen Ill Said), Žižek explores the empty spaces between philosophy, psychoanalysis, and the critique of political economy. He proceeds from the universal dimension of philosophy to the particular dimension of sexuality to the singular dimension of the critique of political economy. The passage from one dimension to another is immanent: the ontological void is accessible only through the impasses of sexuation and the ongoing prospect of the abolition of sexuality, which is itself opened up by the technoscientific progress of global capitalism, in turn leading to the critique of political economy. Responding to his colleague and fellow Short Circuits author Alenka Zupančič's What Is Sex?, Žižek examines the notion of an excessive element in ontology that gives body to radical negativity, which becomes the antagonism of sexual difference. From the economico-philosophical perspective, Žižek extrapolates from ontological excess to Marxian surplus value to Lacan's surplus enjoyment. In true Žižekian fashion, Incontinence of the Void focuses on eternal topics while detouring freely into contemporary issuesfrom the Internet of Things to Danish TV series.

A radical reinterpretation of the origin of religion through a psychoanalytic theorization of the unknown Renowned psychoanalytic philosopher Richard Boothby puts forward a novel theory of religion inspired by Jacques Lacan’s theory of das Ding, the disquieting, inaccessible dimension of fellow human beings. This notion of an unfathomable excess, originally encountered in the figure of the mother, led Lacan to break with Freud’s formulation of the Oedipus complex and underlies Lacan’s distinctive conception of unconscious dynamics. Leaning on this account, Boothby shows how our sense of the sacred arises from our relation to what we do not know. Embracing the Void lays out the range of Freud’s attempts at a psychoanalytic theory of religion and then sketches the rough contours of Lacan’s contrasting approach. From there, Boothby offers the theoretical tools for interpreting the religious impulse and analyzes key religious traditions, from ancient Greek polytheism to Judaism and Christianity, and from Hinduism and Buddhism to Islam, finally turning to modern capitalist culture and the seductive deity that dominates it—money. Lucid, accessible, and compelling, the book provides a cogent intervention in one of the psychoanalytic tradition’s most contentious topics and offers a new approach to our understanding of religion.

Living dolls serve as imperfect replacements for the deceased, a girl without a shadow finds her soulmate and spurned lovers' bodies begin falling to pieces. I was given an opportunity to return to Earth to complete my unfinished business from God. While I was visiting heaven, I had re-signed a contract with God, promising that I would write a book about my experience. I always fulfill what I promise; I believe it is a beautiful thing to do. I have written about my experience in this book, RetrospectiveFrom the Void of Emptiness to Planet Earth. I have explored what it is like living as a spirit in nothingness before we set foot on Earth. In my opinion, our true nature is an infinite being temporarily accommodated in a physical body that we animate on Earth. This is part of the spiritual journey we must take. I have explained how a person should take care of himself, because no one else can provide such personal responsibility for another individual. Therefore, you should love yourself and believe you are significant. Celebrate your life at every moment. In addition, in discussing an issue regarding my health, I realized that the most valuable thing in life is to have superb health. That is how I ended up in heaven but was given a second chance to return to Earth to finish what I wanted to complete.

Purging disorder is characterized by vomiting or misuse of laxatives or other medications, after normal food intake, to control weight or shape. More than two million girls and women in the US suffer from purging disorder, and nearly a half million boys and men join them. But purging disorder's status as an "other" eating disorder has left it invisible to all but those who experience it firsthand. The Void Inside: Bringing Purging Disorder to Light chronicles the growing recognition of purging disorder at the turn of the millennium, reviews what science has taught us about the illness, and explains the medical complications that purging may bring. Pamela K. Keel, known for her work identifying and naming purging disorder, presents irrefutable evidence that it can no longer be considered a subset of better-known eating disorders. She also provides helpful and accessible information on assessment and treatment, and on what recovery looks like after a diagnosis of purging disorder. Drawing on the stories and words of those directly impacted by purging disorder, Keel illuminates how the illness impacts the lives of real people to underscore the severity of this hidden eating disorder, its chronicity, and the need for greater awareness. The Void Inside is an essential resource for accurate, scientifically-based information for those with purging disorder, their friends and loved ones, health professionals, educators, and anyone interested in knowing more about this severe psychiatric illness.
