Between 1492 and 1504, Christopher Columbus made four attempts to find the East by heading West. In the process he lost a fair number of ships; on his last journey alone he lost no fewer than four. Although Columbus also left written documentation of where his boats had gone down, no one has been able to locate even one of the wrecks. (His reports were probably inaccurate, perhaps willfully so--he was frequently less than truthful about his adventures in the New World.) In the mid-1990s, an American expatriate living in Panama--an aging surfer dude who ran a Scuba-diving outfitting shop and diving school--a Panamanian real estate agent, and an American on vacation with his son all claimed to have been the first to locate the remains of a small ship lying in fairly shallow waters in a small gulf in Panama. No one took the discovery seriously, since it had not been made by a team of established archeologists and scientists. Finally, in 2002, the authors of this book--journalists and amateur divers--decided to investigate. They organized a team of American scientists, all of them experts in carbon dating and underwater shipwrecks, who established not only that the Panama wreck was the oldest ever found in the entire Western Hemisphere--dating from around 1500--but that it was very likely the remains of one of Columbus' last ships, the Vizcaina. To be published on the 500th anniversary of Columbus' death, THE VOYAGE OF THE VIZCAINA is a riveting account of shipwreck and adventure, giving readers the story of how the wreck was found and salvaged. Working backward, Brinkbaumer and Hoges combine archaeology and history to recreate the circumstances of the fourth journey, which began in 1502 and ended in 1504. This book is unique in its extensive use of detailed findings to frame its fascinating discoveries and conclusions about exploration in the New World, as well as about the genius and shortcomings of the man known as the Admiral, and credited with the greatest discovery of all time.

In 1492, previously separate worlds collided and began to merge, often painfully, into the world-system in which we live today. Columbus's four Atlantic voyages (1492-1504) helped link Africa, Europe, and the Americas in a conflicted economic and cultural symbiosis. These carefully selected documents describe the voyages and their immediate impact on Europe and the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean. Symcox and Sullivan's engaging introduction presents Columbus as neither hero nor villain, but as a significant historical actor who improvised responses to a changed world. Document headnotes provide context for understanding Columbus's voyages within the broader context of fifteenth-century Europe and the policies of the Spanish crown. Maps, illustrations, a chronology, questions for consideration, and a selected bibliography invite students to analyze and interpret the documents.

Vizcaya On The Eve Of Carlism written by Renato Barahona and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989 with History categories.

This scholarly study examines politics and society in Vizcaya -- an important province in the Spanish Basque region -- during the first third of the nineteenth century. Focusing on the period 1800--1833, the author conducts a detailed historical inquiry into the general origins of the First Carlist War in Vizcaya. Utilizing a vast array of unpublished primary sources gathered in numerous Spanish and French archives, Barahona addresses a wide range of factors -- political, social, economic, ideological, religious, and military -- that laid the foundation for the severe conflicts the region endured in the 1830s. Specifically, the author examines the many significant developments that took place in Vizcaya such as the War of Independence and its aftermath (1808--1814), the First Restoration (1814--1820), constitutionalism and the Liberal Triennium (1820--1823). In addition, detailed attention is given to another important point of conflict: relations between Vizcaya and the Spanish state during the 1823--1833 decade.

We Are Like Air written by Xyza Cruz Bacani and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Filipinos categories.

"Award-winning photographer Xyza Cruz Bacani tells the tale of her mother, a Filipino domestic helper who has spent half of her life in Hong Kong. Also featuring the stories of other female migrant workers, this compilation of Bacani's characteristic black-and-white photographs offers a poignant account of their life away from home and reveals a lesser-known side of Hong Kong beyond the city's skyscrapers and mega malls. In this book, Bacani, who used to be a domestic worker herself, reclaims the story of the migrant worker that has been told countless times by others. This time around, she is telling their own story - not as victims but as champions who have overcome the many hardships life has tossed at them as they leave their families behind in their home country. The book portrays the experience of millions of mothers, daughters and families whose lives have been disrupted by migration. 'We Are Like Air' because migrant workers are often treated like air, invisible but important"--Publisher's website.
