Class III problems are considered practically unsolvable in cryptology, but none has resisted cryptanalytic attack as persistently as the Voynich Manuscript. In the first installment of this 4-volume set, we present the linguistic and affix analysis that preceded the first complete but approximate translation of the entire manuscript. This contrasts with the piecemeal approach of all prior solutions that resulted in wildly divergent translations of minuscule selections of the text. This systemic attack on the entirety of the text and its unusual distributional features (such as extreme platykurtia, which forbid translation into any natural language) resulted first in superior transcription stability and an equally stable symbol set, based on intensive statistical analysis. The encoding scheme employs a 20-22 letter alphabetic script that most closely resembles a slot-and-filler, top-down, a priori pasigraphic system, with oligo-agglutinative features that are currently only considered a theoretical possibility in the linguistics field. The intricate affixing system is based mainly on precise placement of single letters to denote case roles, semantic classes and 3 primary parts of speech (exhibiting a strong noun surfeit). At the phrase level we find dominant SOV order and head-final, dependent-marked grammar compatible with heavily formatted, inline pharmaceutical lists; these result in short ranges of actionable information, which no competing solution can claim. Plant descriptions are demoted in comparison to other herbals, in favor of processing and dispensing details. This approximate solution is based on fuzzy set analysis techniques integrated with linguistic universals, a wide range of common statistics (Pareto and Sukhotin scores, Zipf slopes, Indexes of Coincidence, Agglutination and Synthesis and dozens of others) and many home-brewed fuzzy algorithms implemented in T-SQL and VB.Net, after the inadequacy of many advanced data mining techniques was demonstrated. Our methodology was validated when the project reached an inflection point, beyond which we were able to predict the identities and properties of plants based on the text alone. The project ended with plausible identification candidates for 121 of 126 herbal section plants and 7 others elsewhere in the manuscript, far beyond that of other published solutions. An incredible 100% of the 133 identified plants have dermatological uses. These can be divided into prominent subtopics like treatment of bites; anthelmintics; rheumatism and other musculo-skeletal ailments; inflammatory skin disorders; external and possibly menstrual bleeding; excision of blemishes; application of cosmetics; and cures dispensable in baths. The centerpiece of the manuscript is the "Rosette Folio," which depicts the grand design of a medieval bathhouse, keyed to specific astrological timings also defined by satellite diagrams following a precedence hierarchy. Each of these uses exhibit telltale polygraph correlations that fall into a handful of semantic hierarchies constructed from highly similar bases, such as skin color based diagnostic criteria, remedies/solutions, problems/diseases, plant parts and the like. These findings require 2 volumes to demonstrate and another volume of data and other supplementary material. Despite this complexity, they culminate in a drastic simplification of the script and the first-ever comprehensive translation of the Voynich Manuscript in Volume IV, albeit at low resolution.

Unraveling the Voynich Codex reviews the historical, botanical, zoological, and iconographic evidence related to the Voynich Codex, one of the most enigmatic historic texts of all time. The bizarre Voynich Codex has often been referred to as the most mysterious book in the world. Discovered in an Italian Catholic college in 1912 by a Polish book dealer Wilfrid Voynich, it was eventually bequeathed to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Yale University. It contains symbolic language that has defied translation by eminent cryptologists. The codex is encyclopedic in scope and contains sections known as herbal, pharmaceutical, balenological (nude nymphs bathing in pools), astrological, cosmological and a final section of text that may be prescriptions but could be poetry or incantations. Because the vellum has been carbon dated to the early 15th century and the manuscript was known to be in the collection of Emperor Rudolf II of the Holy Roman Empire sometime between 1607 and 1622, current dogma had assumed it a European manuscript of the 15th century. However, based on identification of New World plants, animals, a mineral, as well as cities and volcanos of Central Mexico, the authors of this book reveal that the codex is clearly a document of colonial New Spain. Furthermore, the illustrator and author are identified as native to Mesoamerica based on a name and ligated initials in the first botanical illustration. This breakthrough in Voynich studies indicates that the failure to decipher the manuscript has been the result of a basic misinterpretation of its origin in time and place. Tentative assignment of the Voynichese symbols also provides a key to decipherment based on Mesoamerican languages. A document from this time, free from filter or censor from either Spanish or Inquisitorial authorities has major importance in our understanding of life in 16th century Mexico. This volume contains four articles written by personnel of the National Security Agency (NSA) about the Voynich manuscript from 1965 to 1978. The first essay, by Brigadier John Tiltman, is entitled "The Voynich Manuscript: The Most Mysterious Manuscript in the World" and was presented to the Baltimore Bibliophiles in 1967. It provides a basic summary of facts about the manuscript and its provenance and adds a survey of proposed solutions, most of which it dispenses with quite quickly. I found it interesting to discover that Tiltman was first introduced to the Voynich ms. by William Friedman, founder of the NSA, in 1947 (!) I was also intrigued that Tiltman's scholarly research into the history of medieval herbalism included consultations with leading English academics, no doubt during visits on "Five Eyes" business. The second essay, originally classifed Top Secret Umbra, is "An Application of PTAH to the Voynich Manuscript" by Mary D'Imperio - the title itself was unclassified. A few pages in, I came to a full stop when I encountered this: "PTAH (named for the Egyptian god of wisdom), is a general statistical method developed at IDA (Institute for Defense Analyses), Princeton University. PTAH got its name when a programmer. Mr.Gerry Mitchell, was listening to the opera "Aida" while working on his program. He was struck by the passage "immenso Ptah noi invociam," and named his program after the Egyptian god. The name was ultimately extended from this program, implementing a particular application of the method, to the method and its mathematical theory as well..." The technical meaning of PTAH remains classified, although Google helped me find a journal article that suggests PTAH must be some sort of Hidden Markov Model. (Math. Comput. Appl. 2019, 24, 14; doi:10.3390/mca24010014) D'Imperio used PTAH to analyze the Voynich manuscript and similar works and concluded that "I find the above comparisions quite convincing support for a view that the Voynich text, regarded as a string of single letters, does not 'act like' natural language. Instead, it exhibits a clear positional regularity or characters within words. I believe that these findings strengthen the theory of Friedman and Tiltman that an artificial language may underlie the Yoynich text." Government interest dating back to 1947 ... pharmacology unknown to modern man ... artificial languages ... the movie "ARRIVAL" based on Ted Chiang's "Story of Your Life" ... hmmm ... The third essay, also by D'Imperio, is "An Application of Cluster Analysis and Multidimensional Scaling to the Question of 'Hands' and 'Languages' in the Voynich Manuscript." She uses cluster analytic techniques to examine findings by Captain Prescott Currier, who suggested that the manuscript's pages can be clustered into groups of multiple authors and styles. D'Imperio's discussion includes warnings that are still sound today: " The interpretation of cluster analysis results is unavoidably circular; we propose a certain structure in the group of objects under study, we perform the computation, and we are happy if we see what we expected, or at least something that makes sense in terms of our original hypothesis, however revised." The fourth and final essay, by James Child, takes an important step forward by proposing that "the Voynich Manuscript does not contain an artificial language nor the enciphered text of an underlying text in an unknown language. but is a text in a hitherto unknown medieval North Germanic dialect." People who enjoy works like THE DA VINCI CODE, PUZZLE PALACE, and Snowden will find this fascinating.

Introduction: The idea to solve the Voynich came to me when I first looked at the glyphs of the entire MS-408 when I first came across it online around 2009. It was a complete mystery and I desperately wanted to know what was behind the so called curtain of the code; like anyone else who has witnessed its very intense complex structure. A starting point for me was the astrology (Folio 67r) wheel and putting together a cipher to break it down. My understanding of astrology helped too and the wheel seldom had tarot side to it included. I counted the glyphs of the Voynich code that were similar and would number them in their perspective place marks. This enabled me to have at least a baseline for the highest and lowest number of Voynich letters to establish which alphabet I would have to find and match it up too. I tried Spanish first, because of the number of vowels and it did not pan out. Well French and German did not work either. Finally, my cipher unraveled nine words from the Rosetta Wheel (Folio 57v) in Italian and then I targeted the Astrology section with amazing results. My decrypting method included this scenario. First I went online and found a great Italian anagram engine which I inputted my cipher into so that it would rearrange the letters into readable Italian. Then I ran a string of sentences together that followed logic and well magic happened. It (Folio 58r) was a mind blowing experience for me knowing that I was making sense out of MS-408.
