Czernowitz at 100 represents a collection based on the proceedings of a 2008 international conference convened at York University in Toronto. They assess the achievements and fate of those who participated in the 1908 Yiddish Language Conference that was held at Czernowitz, now known as Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Featuring contributions from a new generation of scholars re-examining eastern European Jewish life, the successes and failures of the Yiddishist movement are examined. Enlarging America written by Susanne Klingenstein and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-12-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this groundbreaking study, the author examines the gradual opening of literary academe to Jewish faculty and analyzes the critical work Jewish scholars undertook to achieve their integration into an exclusive WASP domain. Beginning her story at Harvard University, Klingenstein describes the unique intellectual paths taken by scholars such as Harry Levin, Daniel Aaron, M. H. Abrams, Leo Marx, and Sacvan Bercovitch. At Columbia University, Klingenstein argues that the singular Jewish presence of Lionel Trilling shaped the minds and inspired the careers of Jewish intellectuals as different as Cynthia Ozick, Norman Podhoretz, Steven Marcus, and Carolyn Heilbrun. Once Jewish scholars had attained a strong foothold in literary academe, pioneering spirits such as Robert Alter and Ruth R. Wisse turned their attention from English and American to Jewish literature in Hebrew and Yiddish. Written as an interconnected series of twelve lucid and compelling portraits of major figures in the history of American literary criticism, this book illuminates the element of serendipity in culture-formation and exposes the social and intellectual forces at work in cultural change.

Analyzes the intellectual and emotional defensiveness of contemporary German culture as revealed in the form and content of literary works written in the wake of the Holocaust. Examines autobiographies, novels, and poems in terms of their images of defensive rigidity and chaos; states that no literary form can possibly contain the lived experience. Discusses Siegfried Lenz's "Deutschstunde", Günter Grass' "Hundejahre", Uwe Johnson's "Jahrestage", Rolf Hochhuth's "Der Stellvertreter", Peter Weiss' "Die Ermittlung", Nelly Sachs' "Landscape of Screams", and Paul Celan's "Engführung".

Thinking The Poetic Measure Of Justice written by Charles Bambach and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-19 with Philosophy categories.

A new reading of justice engaging the work of two philosophical poets who stand in conversation with the work of Martin Heidegger. What is the measure of ethics? What is the measure of justice? And how do we come to measure the immeasurability of these questions? Thinking the Poetic Measure of Justice situates the problem of justice in the interdisciplinary space between philosophy and poetry in an effort to explore the sources of ethical life in a new way. Charles Bambach engages the works of two philosophical poets who stand as the bookends of modernity—Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843) and Paul Celan (1920–1970)—offering close textual readings of poems from each that define and express some of the crucial problems of German philosophical thought in the twentieth century: tensions between the native and the foreign, the proper and the strange, the self and the other. At the center of this philosophical conversation between Hölderlin and Celan, Bambach places the work of Martin Heidegger to rethink the question of justice in a nonlegal, nonmoral register by understanding it in terms of poetic measure. Focusing on Hölderlin’s and Heidegger’s readings of pre-Socratic philosophy and Greek tragedy, as well as on Celan’s reading of Kabbalah, he frames the problem of poetic justice against the trauma of German destruction in the twentieth century.

Sussel is a well to do young woman in Chernowitz, known as little Vienna. She studies languages and pharmacy in several universities in Europe and is looking forward to a full and privileged life. But World War II completely overturns everyone's lives, as first the Russians and then the Germans overtake Chernowitz, rounding up all Jews for work camps and even execution. Sussel is forced to use her pharmaceutical skills, and even sex, to save her own life and those of her father and her childhood suitor, Max. The Walnut Tree sets the devastating power of historical events against the personal forces of reconciliation and enduring love. This powerful, disturbing and finally transcendent story is written with captivating detail and sensuous, often poetic, writing. The novel deals with vital social, political, and ethical issues, and finally, and most importantly, with love.
