The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

WOLVERHAMPTON WARRIORS The Town's Battalions in the Great War The original history if the 1/6th and 2/6th Battalions of the South Staffordshire Regiment was published in 1924. Copies of that book are now scarce and correspondingly expensive. This history has been produced to bring to a wider audience an idea of how the men lived in the trenches, their trials and tribulations, their victories and their defeats. The 1/6th Battalion was the first complete pre-war Territorial unit to serve in France and a second Battalion (the 2/6th) was raised to act initially as a feeder battalion to supply further drafts of men to the 1/6th. After seeing service in Ireland at the start of the Irish Easter Rising in 1916 the 2/6th Battalion was sent to France in its own right in February 1917. Although originally based in Wolverhampton the 1/6th and 2/6th Battalions also contained men from the surrounding towns and villages and eventually from much further afield.

The Dead Of The Irish Revolution written by Eunan O'Halpin and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-20 with History categories.

The first comprehensive account to record and analyze all deaths arising from the Irish revolution between 1916 and 1921 "A monumental new book [and] an incredible piece of research. . . . Formidable, authoritative and handsomely produced, The Dead of the Irish Revolution is a fitting memorial."--Andrew Lynch, Irish Independent "Will surely serve as the indispensable reference work on this topic for the foreseeable future. . . . A truly remarkable feat of close scholarship and calm exposition."--Gearoid O Tuathaigh, Irish Times Weekend This account covers the turbulent period from the 1916 Rising to the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921--a period which saw the achievement of independence for most of nationalist Ireland and the establishment of Northern Ireland as a self-governing province of the United Kingdom. Separatists fought for independence against government forces and, in North East Ulster, armed loyalists. Civilians suffered violence from all combatants, sometimes as collateral damage, often as targets. Eunan O'Halpin and Daithí Ó Corráin catalogue and analyze the deaths of all men, women, and children who died during the revolutionary years--505 in 1916; 2,344 between 1917 and 1921. This study provides a unique and comprehensive picture of everyone who died: in what manner, by whose hands, and why. Through their stories we obtain original insight into the Irish revolution itself.
