Addressing ecologists, legislators, lawyers, and industrialists alike, Ruth Patrick asks what has been accomplished with the millions of dollars spent on upgrading our surface waters. Has the water improved in spite of the fact that the crayfish, snails, and algae are not those that one would expect to find in natural rivers and estuaries? To evaluate the success of environmental laws over the past two decades, the author examines the aquatic life of river systems in the Delaware Valley, Texas, and Georgia--the only areas in the United States where she found enough biological data to determine trends over time. Although tracing the impact of environmental laws is difficult, Patrick found that for these three water systems the results were generally positive. However, if society as a whole wants effective environmental legislation, organizations must take on a more systematic and orderly approach to data gathering. Patrick argues that in monitoring the waters, one must study protozoa, algae, and worms as well as fish, oysters, and shrimp; one must track amounts of metal as well as low concentrations of oxygen. In proposing options for the future, the author predicts that the cost of such monitoring will be higher than present expenditures, but the cost of lax control will be even greater. These fifteen essays inventory and evaluate the cultural resources discovered at the Star Lake Archaeological Research Project in northwestern New Mexico. Commissioned by the Peabody Coal Company to evaluate resources in a strip-mining area, the project turned up remains from the preceramic, Anasazi, and historic periods. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which provides background, with essays by Walter Wait and Neal Lopinot. Part two presents chapters by Wait, Joseph K. Anderson, and Terry J. Powell. Part three contains five chapters dealing with the Anasazi period written by Wait, Terry Klein, Anna Pauline Fondaw, David Barde, and Fred York. This book is designed as a text in courses dealing with contract archaeology, with the application of archaeological method and theory, and with archaeological field techniques. The essays show archaeologists applying some of the newest methods and theoretical techniques, not in an academic setting, but on the job where they worked as archaeologists. In Wait’s terms the book utters a challenge: “Be imaginative, be creative, be archaeologists.”

Lured by prospects of great hunting, fishing, fresh air, and pure water, many affluent summer vacationers set their sights on this region of New York. By 1900, Star Lake had a prospering tourist industry, supporting numerous large hotels. The Star Lake Inn, one of the largest hotels in the western Adirondacks, was among the few in America at that time to cater to the Jewish population of New York City. Numerous Victorian-style cottages were built along the 12 miles of shoreline, many of which still remain.
