This book presents a new and original method for the solution of boundary value problems in angles for second-order elliptic equations with constant coefficients and arbitrary boundary operators. This method turns out to be applicable to many different areas of mathematical physics, in particular to diffraction problems in angles and to the study of trapped modes on a sloping beach. Giving the reader the opportunity to master the techniques of the modern theory of diffraction, the book introduces methods of distributions, complex Fourier transforms, pseudo-differential operators, Riemann surfaces, automorphic functions, and the Riemann–Hilbert problem. The book will be useful for students, postgraduates and specialists interested in the application of modern mathematics to wave propagation and diffraction problems.

The problem of wave diffraction by wedge-shaped structures is important in many applications, including electromagnetics, acoustics and geophysics. Numerous attempts to solve these problems have been made during the last 70 years using both analytical and numerical methods, but this has proved to be very difficult; only a few of the simplest problems of this type have been successfully solved. The difficulties are caused by the nonseparability of variables and the singular behaviour of solutions near the vertex. This Research Note presents a systematic approach allowing the consideration of arbitrary problems of this type and the development of stable numerical algorithms for their solution.

"Methods of the Classical Theory of Elastodynamics" deals not only with classical methods as developed in the past decades, but presents also very recent approaches. Applications and solutions to specific problems serve to illustrate the theoretical presentation. Keywords: Smirnov-Sobolev method with further developments; integral transforms; Wiener-Hopf technique; mixed boundary-value problems; time-dependent boundaries; solutions for unisotropic media (Willis method); 3-d dynamical problems for mixed boundary conditions.

The mathematical problem concerning the diffraction by a semi-infinite cone with circular cross section for the Helmholtz equation, which has well-known solutions for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, is here considered for the more general boundary condition of constant impedance type. As previously stated by D.S. Jones, the problem then changes in complexity, beginning with the difficulty of obtaining the uniqueness of the solution. An exact analytical method is developed to reduce this problem to the determination of the solution of a well-posed non-oscillatory integral equation, of which the solution can be directly used to express the field in an integral form. Some generalization, in particular to the electromagnetic case, are also given.

The book has a dual purpose. The first is to expose a general methodology to solve problems of electromagnetism in geometries constituted of angular regions. The second is to bring the solutions of some canonical problems of fundamental importance in modern electromagnetic engineering with the use of the Wiener-Hopf technique. In particular, the general mathematical methodology is very ingenious and original. It is based on sophisticated and attractive procedures exploiting simple and advanced properties of analytical functions. Once the reader has acquired the methodology, she/he can easily obtain the solution of the canonical problems reported in the book. The book can be appealing also to readers who are not directly interested in the detailed mathematical methodology and/ or in electromagnetics. In fact the same methodology can be extended to acoustics and elasticity problems. Moreover, the proposed practical problems with their solutions constitute a list of reference solutions and can be of interests in engineering production in the field of radio propagations, electromagnetic compatibility and radar technologies.

This book presents a collection of independent mathematical studies, describing the analytical reduction of complex generic problems in the theory of scattering and propagation of electromagnetic waves in the presence of imperfectly conducting objects. Their subjects include: a global method for scattering by a multimode plane; diffraction by an impedance curved wedge; scattering by impedance polygons; advanced properties of spectral functions in frequency and time domains; bianisotropic media and related coupling expressions; and exact and asymptotic reductions of surface radiation integrals. The methods developed here can be qualified as analytical when they lead to exact explicit expressions, or semi-analytical when they drastically reduce the mathematical complexity of studied problems. Therefore, they can be used in mathematical physics and engineering to analyse and model, but also in applied mathematics to calculate the scattered fields in electromagnetism for a low computational cost.

This monograph studies the diffraction of a wave by a curved wedge on the plane in the case where each side of the wedge is characterized by a mixed boundary condition of impedance type. This book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in partial differential equations, in particular in diffraction theory and its applications to problems in physics.

Water Waves The Mathematical Theory With Applications written by James Johnston Stoker and has been published by Courier Dover Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-17 with Science categories.

First published in 1957, this is a classic monograph in the area of applied mathematics. It offers a connected account of the mathematical theory of wave motion in a liquid with a free surface and subjected to gravitational and other forces, together with applications to a wide variety of concrete physical problems. A never-surpassed text, it remains of permanent value to a wide range of scientists and engineers concerned with problems in fluid mechanics. The four-part treatment begins with a presentation of the derivation of the basic hydrodynamic theory for non-viscous incompressible fluids and a description of the two principal approximate theories that form the basis for the rest of the book. The second section centers on the approximate theory that results from small-amplitude wave motions. A consideration of problems involving waves in shallow water follows, and the text concludes with a selection of problems solved in terms of the exact theory. Despite the diversity of its topics, this text offers a unified, readable, and largely self-contained treatment.
