Aikido goes beyond martial arts: it does not only resolve conflict in a constructive way but it also develops our intuition. It gives us an insight that changes old paradigms and transforms our current vision of the world, our mind and spirit, through the practice of harmonious universal movements developed by its Founder, Kaiso Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. It is through its physical training system that Aikido helps us to get the technology we need to improve our lives by using unity, confluence and harmony (Aiki). The way of Aiki is a path intended to prepare us to avoid destructive actions in order to find the value and possibilities it offers in order to develop an Aiki culture. This book presents basic information derived from the great masters teachings that might have been forgotten or neglected throughout the years of its expansion.

This definitive, profusely illustrated manual covers the essential elements of the philosophy and practice of Aikido, the Japanese martial art that has been embraced by modern psychology and many Western bodywork therapies. Useful to the beginner and experienced practitioner alike, the book details the traditional methods and techniques of Shirata Rinjiro, of whom John Stevens is a principal student. Noted for the precise execution of a wide range of techniques and an emphasis on Aikido as a spiritual path, Shirata Sensei's teachings exemplify the way of the warrior: superior technical prowess combined with profound spiritual insight. In addition to photographs and descriptions of all the important Aikido techniques, Stevens recounts interesting and lively anecdotes about the history of Aikido and its founder, Ueshiba Morihei, who developed it from a martial art into a spiritual discipline. A biography of Shirata Sensei, complete with his reflections on sixty years of Aikido practice, is also included.

The inspirational teachings in this collection show that the real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. The teachings are drawn from the talks and writings of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the popular Japanese martial art of Aikido, a mind-body discipline he called the "Art of Peace," which offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict. Ueshiba believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal and business relationships, and in our interactions with society. This is an expanded version of the original miniature edition that appeared in the Shambhala Pocket Classics series. It features a new introduction by John Stevens, recently translated doka, didactic "poems of the Way," and Ueshiba's own calligraphy.

The martial arts are shrouded in the mystique of Asian lore and nuances. Information is well-known by experienced practitioners, but is often kept as an "open secret" among themselves. Aikido is a self-defense martial art (budo) methodology established in Japan by Morihei Usehiba (O'Sensei: 1883-1969), who blended his techniques and weapons experience with deeply held philosophical beliefs into what is often referred to as "the art of peace." Aikido has a rich history originating to feudal period Japan, which continues today with an international fellowship of people who strive to make the world a better place by following the aiki way, and embracing the legacy of the dojo culture as a training hall and sanctuary for enlightenment. The world is in greater need than ever before to embrace the philosophy and approach of Aikido's founder O'Sensei. The Aikido culture helps shape today's youth, transitions adolescents to become contributing members of society, and helps adults continue spiritual and physical self-improvement. It distinguishes itself by shunning the competitive violence spawned by the pseudo-sports popularized in televised cage fighting, street-style brawling, and computer videogames (although Aikido is highly recognized as a headline program at the World Combat Games). "An Open Secret" solves the mystery of Aikido training by revealing factual truths, historical reasoning, and detailed explanations required of all Aikido students. It also takes an in-depth look at the common and unique practices all Aikidoka (practitioners of Aikido); the background of Aikido's rich history as budo (self-defense martial art); a current assessment of the art's international status; and an overview of various sub-styles in the 21st century. A true budo, Aikido is an extremely effective form of self-defense that equalizes size, strength, age and gender. Therefore, "An Open Secret" provides a proven learning methodology for Aikido that can be used by people of all ages, children and seniors alike, and can become a permanent lifestyle for its practitioners with improved physical and spiritual health. Aikido must be felt and experienced in order to understand the power behind this martial art form. Physical training awakens the Aiki spirit within the student who develops physical skills as a way to understand the "mystery" behind the techniques. Its students can embrace spiritual enlightenment by drawing on this knowledge time and time again. "An Open Secret" is a practical training guide that contains many resources, photos, illustrations, general information and techniques Tony knows would have been helpful when he started training years ago, but wasn't readily available to students of Aikido at that time. The reader is taken under Tony's wing, much like a season co-worker would help a newbie learn the ropes at work. He provides unbiased information on common etiquette, student responsibilities, dojo design, proper training apparel, the relationship between student and teacher and between students, training tools and weapons, rank examination, the Aiki spirit, and fundamental training concepts essential to learning Aikido and ultimately the Aiki way. Other topics include step-by-step pointers on selection and care of the uniform (the Aikido gi and hakama), equipment (Aikido weapons - jo and bokken), and the training facility (Aikido dojo). Grading and promotion examination details are covered for both beginning and advanced students, as well as student's progressive responsibilities as they advance in rank and experience.

Aikitaiji is neither Aikido nor T'ai Chi Ch'uan as commonly understood. It's not anything new either. It's a compilation that I found useful after deleting things that didn't work for me. Aikitaiji is a two-point perspective on soft martial art. The best example to distinguish Aikitaiji is the way we engage in the cooperative but slightly competitive practice of Push-hands. Positive, playful competition adds realism (because your partner isn't just taking a dive). It's a direct encounter with flow when conducted in a playful manner. Aikido players could find proper Push-hands a very useful context for their practice. It makes a big difference when both sides agree to probe, push, lock and lose easily enough while putting up some resistance (it's very important to train relative to resisting opponents but not so much at first). The other main difference, one that could help T'ai Chi players, is that we have the option of using the joint-locking and throwing techniques I learned in Aikido (when it's natural) from within the context of T'ai Chi Push-hands. Aikido has joint-locking, throwing/falling and floor exercises. T'ai Chi has the stances and forms that embody the choreography of optimal biomechanical power. Push-hands develops the improvisational and intuitive faculties. I used material from one art to fill in the gaps I found in the other, following soft principles into the conflux of energy/force where responses arise spontaneously and appropriately from an expanded menu of deeply memorized options. Many people who are primarily interested in spiritual/mystical stuff (do they still call it "New Age?") will find that proper martial art is very well suited for self-transcendence. One thing neuro-science is discovering is that we can follow the same learning process to cultivate the body of proper martial art at the same time that we activate the mystical parts of the brain. The same internal/physical process leads to development of ch'i and engages the creative, intuitive and mystical faculties. The pre-condition of our full human potential (which is huge) is a deeply engrained feeling of safety. We need to know that we're safe, competent to defend ourselves, before we can be really free. After we fulfill the pre-condition of security then we can follow the course characteristic of loving (not combative) souls, evolving along the art's path into the mystical/spiritual flow of the cosmos. Confidence in our ability to protect our selves is the same confidence, the same warrior's spirit that carries us to the crossroads we share with infinity. And it's the same confidence that allows us to leap into the unknowable collective universal consciousness, releasing our own unsuspected powers. The work of art that we create in Aikitaiji is our own civil, mature human beingness with the option of unity-on-demand. The most malignant threat to our general health as well as our most vital ally reside in our minds and conscious bodies, and the dark wins by default when we don't recruit, train and empower the proper "soft" or internal warrior. Proper martial art isn't merely destructive. A ferocious martial artist I knew said that it was his very violent training that exposed his heart and nurtured his fearless ability to love. At a certain level we experience yin and yang as two aspects of the same event. Training our internal energy as a healing agent enhances it. The more we use it affectionately to augment others the more it motivates our own immune system. Destructive power and healing power are similar (but not equal) forces and they depend on the consciousness wielding it. We aspire to feel safe and affectionate, relative to all others, and in the process we integrate the world we discover inside our selves with the flow of the cosmos. We grow more virtuous as we become less fearful. We explore the highest (deepest) regions of our inner world, identify with the resultant power, and extend it outward as a force of nature.
