Excerpt from The Way of the West What business have they to send a man out with such a damned old rattle-trap as this? He raged. It's been on the line since Denver wore diapers. It's done up with dry rot till a nail won't hold, and here I'm expected to land this load at Big Bend before six o'clock. Think I can limp there on three wheels? Excerpt from To the East by Way of the West The Lamented author of this book died before its publication, so that it may be called a posthumous work. He was passing the last sheets through the press when his Divine Master called him from labor to reward. As the Letters of Bishop Marvin had been written at my earnest solicitation, and had been first published under my editorial supervision, and as there was a strong affection between him and me, the Publishers requested me to write a Biographical Sketch of the Bishop for the work - which I consented to do. But after hearing Bishop McTyeire's Memorial Discourse, which comprises the main points in Bishop Marvin's life, I thought it would be like gilding refined gold to write the sketch, as the Discourse was kindly permitted to appear in the volume. But this does not preclude a brief Introduction, which it affords me pleasure to furnish. When the General Conference of 1874 requested one of the Bishops to visit China, in the interest of our Missionary work, and when the College of Bishops appointed Bishop Marvin to perform this service, as the President of the Board of Missions, I heartily approved of the suggestion that the Bishop should extend his tour, inspect the operations of the various Missionary Societies in other parts of the world, and attend the session of the British Conference to represent our connection before that venerable body. In the address of that Conference to the General Conference of the M. E. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Way to the West, and the Lives of Three Early Americans Boone Crockett Carson The customary method in writing history is to rely on chronological sequence as the only con meeting thread in the narrative. For this reason many books of history are but little more than loosely bound masses of dates and events that bear no philosophical connection with one another, and therefore are not easily retained in the grasp of the average mind. History, to be of service, must be remembered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Iron Way: A Tale of the Builders of the West The discovery of gold in California aroused the attention of the whole civilized world and caused the migration of vast numbers of people from "the States" to the Pacific Coast. The means of reaching the gold fields were by the long and tedious voyage "around the Horn," by enduring the scarcely lesser hardships of two voyages and overcoming obstacles almost insurmountable in crossing the Isthmus, or by a still more arduous journey of thousands of miles across the continent, traversing great plains, climbing precipitous and rugged mountains, and, parched with thirst, wearily making a journey through desert sands and death valleys, along a forlorn track which may even now be traced by skulls and bones of men and beasts who perished by the way, still whitening in the sun. It is not strange that a people of such enterprise and resources as ours should, under these circumstances, have been impressed with the importance of making a highway across the continent. The Civil War which followed proved the necessity of bringing the people of all sections of the country into closer relations, and made the necessity of building such a highway imperative. Excerpt from Down Our Way: Stories of Southern and Western Character It was at first a matter of indifference to Captain Lee that in the dismemberment of the Confederacy the records of his regiment had been destroyed. The memories so overwhelmingly present with him must, he thought, be part of the universal knowledge, not to be lost. Later it seemed to him that all the world but himself had forgotten. He tried to find his old commander, to get some accredited statement of his services; but the Colonel was dead, and the other officers were scattered beyond finding. The letters that the Captain had written to his wife had been lost in moving to town from the plantation, and his body servant who went up to Richmond with him when he enlisted had died in the first yellow fever year. Excerpt from Men Who Are Making the West The typical Western leader has an open-hearted ness, a warmth, a friendliness, a cheeriness, a charming democracy of manner not equalled by the ultra-busy men of large affairs farther East. The whole atmosphere in the West is different. Even the busiest of men there contrive to find time for cordiality, for courtesy, for hospitality. The air seems less charged With the spirit of competition, of catch-as-catch-can. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
