Excerpt from The Way of These Women The motor is here, my lord, he said. Sir Jermyn did not expect you, I think, until the later train. We had orders to meet the half-past seven. Changed my mind at the last moment, Lord Lakenham declared. Fact is, it was so hot in town I was glad to get away. Have you come to meet any one else? Wealthy playwright Sir Jermyn Annerley finds himself caught up in a love-triangle between the beautiful actress Sybil Cluley and his rival for her love, Lord Lakenham. Secrets from their pasts all start to surface however, and a dramatic turn of events results in a shocking murder. Who is responsible? Is there still a chance for true love to blossom? An intriguing dark romance from prolific author E. Phillips Oppenheim. E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946) was a hugely prolific and highly popular British author of novels and short stories. Born in Tottenham, London, Oppenheim left school as a teenager and worked for his leather-merchant father for 20 years prior to launching his literary career. Oppenheim published five novels under the pseudonym ‘Anthony Partridge’ before establishing his reputation as a writer under his own name. An internationally successful author, Oppenheim’s stories revolved mainly around glamourous characters, luxurious settings, and themes of espionage, suspense, and crime. He is widely regarded as one of the earliest pioneers of the thriller and spy-fiction genre as it is recognised today. Oppenheim’s incredible literary success meant that his own life soon began to mirror that of his opulent characters. He held lavish, Gatsby-style parties at his French Villa and was rumoured to have had frequent love affairs aboard his luxury yacht. Oppenheim’s success earned him the cover of Time magazine in 1927. Some of his most well-known novels include ‘The Great Impersonation’, ‘The Long Arm of Mannister’ and ‘The Moving Finger’.

Excerpt from Some Women's Ways It was a strong, full voice that uttered these words as the door Opened; musical, in spite of a certain hardness about its careless tones; and it harmonized curiously with the appear ance of the woman to whom it belonged. She was a woman in whom the evanescent charm of girlhood, with its inexperiences, ignorances, and assumptions, had passed into a maturity which was just entering upon its most perfect stage. She was tall, well-propor tioned, graceful with the unconscious ease of absolute self-possession, in spite of certain little brusqueries of manner. Her features were excellent; but no one on first meeting Bride Heseltine ever thought of her as handsome. Exactly what constituted her charm her friends would have been puzzled to say. They might have declared that she was brilliant, eccentric, kind-hearted, a good talker, a good listener, or what not, each according to his or her indi vidual fancy; and none of their statements would have accurately represented the fact. She sat down at the tea table now, and drew off her gloves with deft, vigorous movements. She was dressed with the same perfection of fashionable detail as was her visitor; but an unconscious emanation of originality blended her very clothes into a characteristic whole. Excerpt from These Splendid Women: With Introduction and Notes The queen was waiting impatiently for news from Caesar. On the receipt of his first message, but partially transmitted by Pothinus, she had hastened to disband her army. She already felt full Confidence in the favor of the great leader who was called the husband of all women, but she knew that she must see Caesar, or rather that Caesar must see her. But the days passed and the invitation to Alexandria did not arrive. Finally the second message reached her, and she learned that Caesar had already sent for her to go to him, but that Pothinus had taken measures to prevent her knowing it. Cleopatra, abandoning the idea of entering Alexandria with the trappings of a queen, bethought herself of a plan to do so not merely under a disguise, but as a bale of goods. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
