2021 Illumination Book Awards, Gold Medal: Spirituality What is the “inner chapel”? The place within where God meets us. We can trust God—and we can trust in God’s promises to us, including: We are never alone. We are loved--unconditionally. We have a companion in our suffering. Each of us has a unique call. But how do we experience all that God has given us? By going to the inner chapel, that sacred place within each person where God waits to love us unconditionally. There, God gives us all we need to find our way to a life of hope instead of despair, peace instead of continued restlessness, and joy instead of anxiety. Becky Eldredge offers readers down-to-earth stories, prayer experiences to try, and enthusiastic encouragement for spiritual growth and a deeper friendship with God. The Inner Chapel will inspire individuals but also provide excellent material for small groups and people going on retreat.

The earliest Christian church was called The Way. It was called this because Jesus Christ's advent, life, death, and resurrection did not focus upon theology as such or doctrines as such or upon achieving warm, fuzzy feelings as such. Jesus's teachings and life were all focused upon a way of life. A way of life focused upon a relationship with God, and a way of life focused upon our relationships with our fellow men and women. Jesus shined a spotlight on how we are to live yearly, weekly, daily, act by act, step by step, decision by decision under the watchful eyes of a gracious, loving God who knows us and calls us by name. Even Jesus's death and resurrection were pointers revealing the way, the way of the journey we will all take one day. This small book is called The Way because it focuses, as Jesus did, upon the how-tos needed to cope with an increasingly irreligious, if not anti-Christian culture. How do I deal with fear? How do I deal with my guilt? How do I? From my observation and experience, these are the questions in the mind of the man or woman in the pew. There are ways. There is a way. They were pioneered for us by Jesus. He and his way is The Way.

This sweeping collection of new translations paints a brilliant picture of the development of Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism, China’s most radical philosophical and meditative tradition. In this landmark anthology of some two dozen translations, celebrated translator David Hinton shows how Ch'an (Japanese: Zen)—too long considered a perplexing school of Chinese Buddhism—was in truth a Buddhist-inflected form of Taoism, China's native system of spiritual philosophy. The texts in The Way of Ch’an build from seminal Taoism through the “Dark-Enigma Learning” literature and on to the most important pieces from all stages of the classical Ch’an tradition. Guided by Hinton’s accessible introductions, readers will encounter texts and authors including: I Ching (c. 12th century BCE) Lao Tzu (c. 6th century BCE Bodhidharma (active c. 500-550 CE) Sixth Patriarch Prajna-Able (Hui Neng, 638-713) Cold Mountain (Han Shan: c. 8th-9th centuries) Yellow-Bitterroot Mountain (Huang Po, d. 850) Blue-Cliff Record (c. 1040) Through this steadily deepening and transformative reading experience, readers will see the profound and intricate connections between native Chinese philosophy, Taoism, and Ch’an. Contemporary Zen students and practitioners will never see their tradition in the same way again.

Growing up in a dysfunctional home in the Netherlands, Remko Jorritsma began smoking, drinking, and using drugs at a young age. He was on the path to destruction, constantly finding himself needing the next fix and never really feeling whole. But just when you think your life is going to end, God can come in and do some amazing things and set you on a completely different path altogether. From the divorce of his parents, which left him feeling like a boy without a home, to run-ins with the police and encounters with drug dealers, Jorritsma lays it all out there in hopes of helping others who may have lost their way. In Off the Streets and On the Way, Jorritsma details his own journey from living on the streets, addicted to drugs, to finding the Way, the Truth, and the Life in Jesus Christ. This honest and raw look into the life of a drug addict will humble any reader and offers hope to those who struggle with their own addictions. God is more powerful than any addiction and can set you on the Way as well.
