“Lovely and empowering.” —Ashley Herring Blake, author of the Stonewall Honor–winning Ivy Aberdeen’s Letter to the World Twelve-year-old Zoey navigates the tricky waters of friendship while looking for a way to save her grandfather’s struggling business in this “heartfelt” (Kirkus Reviews) debut novel perfect for fans of Kristi Wientge, Donna Gephart, and Meg Medina. Zoey comes from a family of dreamers. From start-up companies to selling motorcycles, her dad is constantly chasing jobs that never seem to work out. As for Zoey, she’s willing to go along with whatever grand plans her dad dreams up—even if it means never staying in one place long enough to make real friends. Her family being together is all that matters to her. So Zoey’s world is turned upside down when Dad announces that he’s heading to a new job in New York City without her. Instead, Zoey and her older brother, José, will stay with their Poppy at the Jersey Shore. At first, Zoey feels as lost and alone as she did after her mami died. But soon she’s distracted by an even bigger problem: the bowling alley that Poppy has owned for decades is in danger of closing! After befriending a group of kids practicing for a summer bowling tournament, Zoey hatches a grand plan of her own to save the bowling alley. It seems like she’s found the perfect way to weave everyone’s dreams together…until unexpected events turn Zoey’s plan into one giant nightmare. Now, with her new friends counting on her and her family’s happiness hanging in the balance, Zoey will have to decide what her dream is—and how hard she’s willing to fight for it.

One of Oprah.com's "17 Must-Read Books for the New Year" and O Magazine's "10 Titles to Pick up Now." “Exquisite in its honesty and truth and resilience, and a necessary chronicle from one of the greatest writers of our time. ” —Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, The Guardian, Best Books of 2016. “Every page ripples with a contagious faith in education and in the power of literature to shape the imagination and scour the conscience.” —The Washington Post From one of the world's greatest writers, the story of how the author found his voice as a novelist at Makerere University in Uganda Birth of a Dream Weaver charts the very beginnings of a writer's creative output. In this wonderful memoir, Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o recounts the four years he spent at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda—threshold years during which he found his voice as a journalist, short story writer, playwright, and novelist just as colonial empires were crumbling and new nations were being born—under the shadow of the rivalries, intrigues, and assassinations of the Cold War. Haunted by the memories of the carnage and mass incarceration carried out by the British colonial-settler state in his native Kenya but inspired by the titanic struggle against it, Ngũgĩ, then known as James Ngugi, begins to weave stories from the fibers of memory, history, and a shockingly vibrant and turbulent present. What unfolds in this moving and thought-provoking memoir is simultaneously the birth of one of the most important living writers—lauded for his "epic imagination" (Los Angeles Times)—the death of one of the most violent episodes in global history, and the emergence of new histories and nations with uncertain futures.

The Weaver's Dream was first published in paperback under the name Donna Baker. London, 1824. Life has taken Rebecca far from her humble start in a weaver's cottage in Kidderminster. But although she has found love and comfort with her husband, Francis, it has meant they are both banished from the town that raised them. Instead they must raise their family - and a new business in the bustle of the capital. But when a death finally draws them home to Worcestershire, they find the landscape unchanged, but the poverty increased. Amid the smoke of the factories and the clatter of machinery there is also the growing murmur of unrest as the workers search for a way to express their discontent. For Rebecca, Francis and their young family it means being torn between family duty and sympathy for the weavers' plight. And while they have a dream for the future, will it be strong enough to survive the turmoil ahead?

The main question that guided the thinking behind this book can be stated as follows: "What kind of leadership behavior must executives of technology-driven organizations display to spur performance excellence?" To address this question the authors conducted videotaped interviews of executives from 65 organizations– including General Electric, Qualcomm, The Vanguard Group, and Barclays Global Investors – to identify common behaviors and traits that lead to organizational success. In addition to the interviews, they surveyed the executives’ followers to evaluate the leadership and organizational culture to examine successful executive leadership from multiple reference points. The authors found that displaying outstanding executive leadership doesn't necessarily require a commanding presence, a genius-level IQ, expertise, or even a strong command and control system. At the heart of outstanding strategic leadership was an ability to envision a strategy for taking the raw inputs provided by their environments (e.g., people, technology, ideas, opportunities) and then to weave them into an integrated pattern or system of social, technical and intellectual resources that ultimately produce dramatically higher levels of organizational success factors. The book includes dozens of stories and narratives from the executive leaders to offer readers an in-depth look at what constitutes effective strategy-focused leadership in technology-driven organizations.

Nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains lies Hearthstone, a village untouched by time, where life's rhythm echoes the seasons and the hum of the Loom. This colossal structure, a testament to generations of weavers, dominates the village square, its intricate framework holding the threads of their dreams, anxieties, and the very essence of their lives. These threads form the Tapestry, a shimmering artwork that binds the community to the land and to each other. But the whispers of the modern world, with its seductive promises, are creeping into the valley, threatening to unravel this ancient magic. Seventeen-year-old Elara Holcomb, a girl with moss agate eyes and a spirit as wild as the mountain winds, possesses a unique gift: she hears the stories whispered within the Tapestry’s threads. When she stumbles upon a hidden chamber containing a forgotten fragment depicting a betrayal etched in faded crimson and shadow, a jolt of ancient sorrow awakens within her, and the villagers are plagued by unsettling nightmares. The vibrant Tapestry begins to fray, mirroring the fear spreading through Hearthstone, and the familiar mountain melodies fall silent. Elara senses a connection to this forgotten betrayal, a wound echoing through her own family's past. She must unravel this inherited secret to save her village. Her search leads her to Rhys Ainsworth, a reclusive dream-catcher who dwells in a cabin shrouded by ancient pines. He doesn’t snare dreams, but weaves intricate nets to guide lost dreams home. Existing between the waking world and the ethereal realm of dreams, Rhys is haunted by visions, yet offers an unexpected sanctuary to Elara. He has glimpsed a shadowy figure, the Weaver of Nightmares, corrupting the Tapestry. Together, Elara and Rhys journey into the Dreamweaver’s Realm, a breathtaking landscape woven from Hearthstone’s collective unconscious. Here, trees bear fruit whispering forgotten memories, and rivers of moonlight flow through valleys of mist. But this ethereal realm hides a terrible danger: the Weaver of Nightmares, born from the fragment Elara unearthed, feeds on fear, weaving it into ever-more potent nightmares. As they navigate this shifting landscape, Elara and Rhys confront the villagers' deepest anxieties. Elara learns that the forgotten betrayal centers around a broken pact made by her ancestor – a pact that severed Hearthstone’s magic and opened the door for the Weaver.
