This addition to The Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations provides an updated, clear, and concise history of Great Britain that will be of value to undergraduates and to a general readership This updated and expanded volume serves as an introduction to the history of Great Britain, from prehistory to the present. Guiding the reader through complex developments in politics, economics, culture, and empire, this book helps readers to understand how the four kingdoms of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland have come together and split apart over centuries of change. Chronologically arranged chapters will help readers to better understand British history as it includes pre-Roman Britain, Britain's Tudors, the Reformation, and World Wars I and II, in addition to current events such as Brexit and others for which Theresa May has been prime minister. A timeline, a glossary, and an appendix of significant individuals in the history of Great Britain help to round out the text. The strong narrative line allows readers to understand the ways in which Great Britain has both responded to and guided global changes in economics and class, gender and race, and the politics of expansionism and nativism.

Britain S Last Tommies written by Richard Van Emden and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-03-19 with History categories.

The First World War as a living history is to all intents and purposes over. As of today February 2005, there are only twelve veterans from six million alive who served on the Western Front. Richard has spent the last 20 years interviewing and carefully recording the memories of over 270 veterans and this book is a culmination of his 20 years of work. The book will be an extraordinary collection of stories told by the veterans themselves but also through the author's memories of them: the remarkable, the sad, the funny, the moving. It will also feature an outstanding collection of photographs taken of the veterans as they were, as soldiers during the war together with recent images of almost all of these men, taken at home, back on the Western Front, at the final veterans' reunion, and at various investitures. Britain's Last Tommies will also offer a unique list of veterans, all of who individually hold the poignant title of being the last Gallipoli veteran, the last Royal Flying Corps veteran, the last Distinguished Conduct Medal holder, the last cavalryman, the last Prisoner of War.

Disaster Before D Day written by Stephen Wynn and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-30 with History categories.

“An eye-opening exposé of the Pre-D-Day disaster and incident of friendly fire tragedy and cover up that was the Slapton Sands.” —WorldWars.com This is a book of two stories. The first is the sad tale of how at least 749 American servicemen lost their lives on a pre-D-Day landing exercise, code-named “Operation Tiger,” on the evening of 23/24 April 1943. The second, was the unanswerable question of whether the attacking E-Boats of the German Kriegsmarine had fully grasped the importance of what they had stumbled across. Because of the time scale between the operation and the actual D-Day landings, secrecy surrounding the tragedy had to be stringently adhered to, and even after the invasion of Normandy, only scant information about the incident and those who were killed was ever released. The other factor that was of major concern, was if the Germans had understood the significance of the vessels they had attacked, then the intended Allied invasion of Europe was in grave danger of having to be postponed for an indefinite period of time. In late 1943, as part of the buildup to the D-day landings at Normandy, the British government had set up a training ground at Slapton Sands in Devon, to be used by the American forces tasked with landing on Utah Beach in Normandy. Coordination and communication problems between British and American forces, resulted in friendly fire deaths during the exercise, making a bad situation even worse. The story was then lost to history until Devon resident, Ken Small, discovered evidence of the aftermath washed up on the shore at Slapton Sands in the early 1970s.

Shot at Dawn chronicles the tragic fate of more than 300 soldiers on the Western Front between 1918-18. The authors scoured the Imperial War Museum, public records and war diaries to piece together the jigsaw. A graphic account of man's inhumanity to man is the result of their labours.
