For centuries, countless Christians have turned to the Westminster Standards for insights into the Christian faith. These renowned documents—first published in the middle of the 17th century—are still considered by many to be some of the most beautifully written summaries of the Bible's teaching ever produced. Church historian John Fesko walks readers through the background and theology of the Westminster Confession, the Larger Catechism, and the Shorter Catechism, helpfully situating them within their original context. Organized according to the major categories of systematic theology, this book utilizes quotations from other key works from the same time period to shed light on the history and significance of these influential documents.

Excerpt from The Significance of the Westminster Standards as a Creed: An Address Delivered Before the Presbytery of New York, November 8, 1897, on the Occasion of the Celebration of the Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Completion of the Westminster Standards It would be difficult for me adequately to ex press the pleasure which it gives me to respond to your invitation to join with you to-day in celebrating the fifth jubilee of the gift of the Westminster Standards to the world. The task you have laid upon me, of seeking to set forth the significance of that gift, though it has its difficulties arising from its magnitude, cannot fail to appeal powerfully to one who has, in all sincerity and heartiness, set his hand to these Standards as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures. It is not merely a duty but a pleasure to bear witness to the truth of God as we apprehend it, and to give a reason from time to time for the faith that is in us. I cannot, indeed, hope to tell over today all that the Westminster Standards are to us - to unfold in detail all that has for two cen. The Westminster Assembly met from 1643-1649 with a mandate to produce a doctrinal standard that would promote unity between the church in England and Scotland as well as Wales and Ireland. Amongst the numerous documents produced by the Assembly is the Westminster Confession of Faith. This is regarded by many theologians and historians to be one of the most, if not the most, theologically robust, comprehensive and biblical creed that Christendom has ever produced. It is the standard that undergirds most Presbyterian Churches throughout the world. Regrettably, though many Christians today are either unfamiliar with it or can only claim a superficial acquaintance with it. This commentary compiled out of class notes for a sabbath class in Pilgrim Covenant Church in Singapore is designed to give a fairly in-depth introduction to this historic creed to stir an interest to study it and also to encourage its honest use to bring the church back to the Old Paths wherein Christ may be highly exalted through faith and obedience in Him.
