The Wherewithal of Life engages with current developments in the anthropology of ethics and migration studies to explore in empirical depth and detail the life experiences of three young men – a Ugandan migrant in Copenhagen, a Burkina Faso migrant in Amsterdam, and a Mexican migrant in Boston – in ways that significantly broaden our understanding of the existential situations and ethical dilemmas of those migrating from the global south. Michael Jackson offers the first biographically based phenomenological account of migration and mobility, providing new insights into the various motives, tactics, dilemmas, dreams, and disappointments that characterize contemporary migration. It is argued that the quandaries of African or Mexican migrants are not unique to people moving between ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ worlds. While more intensely felt by the young, seeking to find a way out of a world of limited opportunity and circumscribed values, the experiences of transition are familiar to us all, whatever our age, gender, ethnicity or social status – namely, the impossibility of calculating what one may lose in leaving a settled life or home place; what one may gain by risking oneself in an alien environment; the difficulty of striking a balance between personal fulfillment and the moral claims of kinship; and the struggle to know the difference between ‘concrete’ and ‘abstract’ utopias (the first reasonable and worth pursuing; the second hopelessly unattainable).

How are we to think of works of art? Rather than treat art as an expression of individual genius, market forces, or aesthetic principles, Michael Jackson focuses on how art effects transformations in our lives. In this book Christopher Belshaw draws on earlier work concerning death, identity, animals, immortality, and extinction, and builds a large-scale argument dealing with questions of both value and meaning. Rejecting suggestions that life is sacred or intrinsically valuable, he argues instead that its value varies, and varies considerably, both within and between different kinds of things. So in some cases we might have reason to improve or save a life, while in others that reason will be lacking. What about starting lives? The book’s central section takes this as its focus, and asks whether we ever have reason to start lives, just for the sake of the one whose life it is. Not only is it denied that there is any such reason, but some sympathy is afforded to the anti-natalist contention that there is always reason against. The final chapters deal with meaning. There is support here for the sober and familiar view that meaning derives from an enthusiasm for, and some success with, the pursuit of worthwhile projects. Now suppose we are immortal. Or suppose, in contrast, that we face imminent extinction. Would either of these threaten meaning? The claim is made that the force of such threats is often exaggerated. The Value and Meaning of Life is essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy, ethics, and religion, and will be of interest to all those concerned with how to live, and how to think about the lives of others.

For years, I was a proud employee of General Motors. I loved my work as a Journeyman Electrician. Unfortunately, my work was transformed into a horror story when I was assigned to Pontiac Assembly Center. There, I was routinely bullied, harassed, and threatened by co-workers and supervisors. When I asked GM management for help, they responded by aligning themselves with my persecutors. I was threatened with physical violence, stalked, denied safety rights, forced to do work others were unwilling to do, and refused medical treatment. I was removed from a coveted job by a Superintendent, who cited my MS condition, blatantly ignoring rights afforded under ADA. I was called "Black Nigger Bitch". There were pictures posted about the plant, where I was depicted as "ROADKILL". KKK style nooses were hung in the plant. A General Foreman pressed his face close to mine and said, "I can't promise you you're going to live the next few minutes." I next turned to the justice system for help. When my case went before a Circuit Court Judge, he swiftly and willfully granted summary disposition judgments in GM's favor. Undaunted, I began my own investigation. In doing so, I discovered that 108 pages of my deposition had disappeared. I uncovered a letter from a GM executive threatening a union official who planned on helping me. My lawyer lied to me about having filed an appeal. Where is the justice when a court of law condones this as acceptable behavior in a civilized society? How can America hold itself out as a free and just society that other countries would choose to emulate? Should corporate entities such as GM be allowed to not only bend the law, but to break the law? How and why could such travesty have been allowed to occur?
