It was not until after the Second World War that the White Cane came into its own and gained ground as a recognised aid. Visually handicapped persons were trained scientifically in the use of the cane, and rehabilitation facilities all over the world adopted and updated modes of training which were developed in North America and in Europe. The White Cane indeed is truly the visually handicapped person's loyal, faithful and dependable companion. I refer to my cane as Excalibur It serves me as well as the legendary - sword serves King Arthur. Both protect their owners. They are not to be abused and if treated well, and the cause just, the sword and the cane alike respond magnificently. If abused, both render their owners helpless.
