Gustave Aimard (13 September 1818 - 20 June 1883) was the author of numerous books about Latin America and the American frontier. Aimard was born Olivier Aimard in Paris. As he once said, he was the son of two people who were married, "but not to each other". His father, François Sébastiani de la Porta (1775-1851) was a general in Napoleon's army and one of the ambassadors of the Louis Philippe government. Sébastiani was married to the Duchess de Coigny. In 1806 the couple produced a daughter: Alatrice-Rosalba Fanny. Shortly after her birth the mother died. Fanny was raised by her grandmother, the Duchess de Coigny. According to the New York Times of July 9, 1883, Aimard's mother was Mme. de Faudoas, married to Anne Jean Marie René de Savary, Duke de Rovigo (1774-1833).

Excerpt from The White Scalper: A Story of the Texan War These engravings will necessarily enhance the pleasure of the reader; as the most careful attention has been paid to correct ness of costume and scenery, and a perfect idea can be at once formed from them Of the peculiarities Of the country in which the scene is laid. In all Indian novels that have hitherto been published with illustrations, this important point has been neglected; but the purchasers Of the Illustrated Edition Of gustave aimard's works may feel assured that whatever is Offered them in the way Of elucidating the text is strictly true to Nature. When it is stated, for instance, that the Indian dresses have been Obtained from catlin's elaborate work, and the dis tinctive costumes Of each tribe faithfully adhered to, the Pub lishers trust this will prove a sufficient guarantee that no idle boast is intended. At the same time, artistic value has not been neglected. The engraving has been intrusted to Mr. Edmund evans, who has surpassed all his former efforts in the elabora tion Of these, the most perfect specimens which have yet issued from his studio. "A stirring story, much more humanly complicated than any Cooper had to tell, or indeed than has been told by previous historian. . . . Individual anecdotes Frzier has turned up might be the subjects of whole novels."--Boston Globe. "With extensive research in primary sources, Frazier's account deserves praise for its insights into the uncharted waters of eighteenth-century Indian history."--Choice "Immortalized by James Fenimore Cooper in The Last of the Mohicans, the Mohicans Indians originated in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Frazier, a specialist in Native American studies with the Library of Congress, presents a detailed, scholarly account of these Indians; he hopes to make his readers aware of the contributions they made to American history. He covers the Mohicans' conversion to Christianity and the ramifications this had for them. He examines the various ways they interacted with the settlers, both Dutch and New Englanders, in trading, and as soldiers and victims of expansion and alcohol. Frazier has done extensive research and uses solid documentation."--Library Journal "The calm suggestiveness of The Mohicans of Stockbridge makes it a model for future studies of native peoples."--Times Literary Supplement. Patrick Frazier has been employed by the Library of Congress since 1959, most recently as a reference specialist on North American Indians. His publications include Portrait Index of North American Indians in Published Collections and a forthcoming guide to North American Indian collections in the Library of Congress.
