Foreword Followers of contemporary poetry who’ve heard Sonnet Mondal reading his poems at international festivals will know something of the distinctiveness of his voice and the philosophising delicacy of his work. In Karmic Chanting he has assembled many of his most beautiful recent poems. His is a poetry of light and shadow, of shimmering childhood and reflective adulthood: ‘My mind is heavier than my soul,’ he writes, and ‘I wish I had left myself / to the charity of wilderness.’ Here we find something of the tension between inner and outer worlds—and the way one betrays the other—as well as the remembered pain of such perceptions. Here is the poet ‘as a meditating owl / hooting mantras in the zero hour.’ His is a poetry of brilliant metaphors and similes, such as the sight of flags on their flag-poles ‘like fish / trapped by fish hooks’ or the human life lived by daylight assembled for the night as a heap of broken mirrors. A poet of both wilderness and solitude, he speaks to us of the sovereignty of love, of the elasticity and nebulousness of time, but also of the precise knowledge gained at the xiv end of things as he watches a corpse burning ‘in the burning ghat by the sea.’ As he says, so accurately, it’s not that he’s had a favourite face but a favourite perception. Whether he’s thinking of the WhatsApp selfie taken in a glassy arcade in Dubai or the four plastic sunflowers in his bedroom (a harvest from a toxic April in his life), he remains, at all times, the philosopher-poet, the one creating a balancing act between being and non-being. Here, then, is a poetic voice born in the loos, the hot summer winds of Northern India, a voice that speaks to our universal human condition; a poet who speaks to us in a voice as intimate as an eyebrow and as universal as a grandmother. Amitav Ghosh is an authoritative critical introduction to the fictional and non-fictional writings of one of the most celebrated and significant literary voices to have emerged from India in recent decades. It is the first full-length study of Amitav Ghosh's work to be available outside India. Encompassing all of Ghosh's fictional and non-fictional writings to date, this book takes a thematic approach which enables in-depth analysis of the cluster of themes, ideas and issues that Ghosh has steadily built up into a substantial intellectual project. This project overlaps significantly with many of the key debates in postcolonial studies making this book both an introduction to Ghosh's writing and a contribution to the development of ideas on the 'postcolonial', in particular, its relation to postmodernism. Aimed at students and the general reader, this book is an ideal introduction to one of contemporary literature's most fascinating writers.

The book Diaspora Literature: Identity Beyond Borders is a compendium of erudite academic articles depicting the generations of diasporic contemplation and consequences figured out in the literature of this specific theme and motif. The book is an enterprise to portray the displacement, alienation, clashes, assimilation, acculturation, rootlessness, torn identities, quest for identity, crisis of identity, and fusion and conflict between two cultures that have been stringed out in three parts of diasporic concerns—Ecumenical Scenario, Acculturation and Question of Hyphenation in Indian Diaspora and Oscillating State of expatriates and immigrants.

Never accept culture on its face value! It is because culture carries with it both retrogressive and progressive values. Progressive values of culture can cause development of society; but retrogressive elements of culture can play role against development and that is what has happened in case of folk literature. Various forms of folk literature have depicted many an instances of gender inequality, gender discrimination and have undermined the status of women in society. The book ‘Women in Folk Literature: Exposition of their Status through Gender Lenses’ is the result of my prolonged research and thinking and a record of the presence of gender inequality in folk literature in general and folk songs, fairy tales and folk tales, proverbs and riddles in particular. I have noticed that most of the discussion on folk literature is presented from uncritical entertainment viewpoint. Most of the folklorists have very carefully avoided the discussion of retrogressive features of the various forms of folk literature. Society is the maker of culture and on the other hand culture also reconstructs society. In terms of such mutual interaction between society and culture, the identification of the retrogressive features of folk literature and the sociological observation and reassessment of their origin, evolution and social influence is urgently needed and should be an important cultural agenda of the day. Everybody, especially women love to hear, read and perform various rites like vow-rhymes, folk songs and thereby want to get innocent pleasure; but the hidden messages of gender inequality extended in different shades and layers of these various forms of folk literature affect their innocent mind and direct them towards gender socialization by indoctrinating them in the ideology of masculinity and femininity. So, it is high time to unmask the actual objectives of folk literature and to assess them from a critical approach through gender lenses especially.

This volume offers a new account of the relationship between literary and secularist scenes of writing in interwar Britain. Organized secularism has sometimes been seen as a phenomenon that lived and died with the nineteenth century. But associations such as the National Secular Society and the Rationalist Press Association survived into the twentieth and found new purpose in the promotion and publishing of serious literature. This book assembles a group of literary figures whose work was recommended as being of particular interest to the unbelieving readership targeted by these organisations. Some, including Vernon Lee, H.G. Wells, Naomi Mitchison, and K.S. Bhat, were members or friends of the R.P.A.; others, such as Mary Butts, were sceptical but nonetheless registered its importance in their work; a third group, including D.H. Lawrence and George Moore, wrote in ways seen as sympathetic to the Rationalist cause. All of these writers produced fiction that was experimental in form and, though few of them could be described as modernist, they shared with modernist writers a will to innovate. This book explores how Rationalist ideas were adapted and transformed by these experiments, focusing in particular on the modifications required to accommodate the strong mode of unbelief associated with British secularism to the notional mode of belief usually solicited by fiction. Whereas modernism is often understood as the literature for a secular age, Unbelief in Interwar Literary Culture looks elsewhere to find a literature that draws more directly on secularism for its aesthetics and its ethics.
