An in situ or "on location" approach to language learning is presented for people going abroad for an extended period of time. The approach features two components: (1) the use of a mentor (native speaker who lives in the community and serves as a guide); and (2) the "daily learning cycle" of planning, practicing, communicating face-to-face, and evaluating. This approach gives the traveler responsibility for learning in real interaction situations with immediate feedback. Examples of topics covered include: benchmarks for evaluation; selection, communication with, and compensation for a mentor; hints for increasing interaction opportunities; language structures, nuance, and word clusters; cultural appropriateness; and getting a head start at home. Six detailed lesson plans are included for dining out, transportation, shopping, currency, medical needs, and figuring out meanings of unfamiliar words. Contains 49 references. (LB)

Understanding Second Language Learning Difficulties written by Madeline E. Ehrman and has been published by SAGE Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-09-26 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

"This volume has some really nice features such as: the discussion of audio-lingual theory as deriving from behaviorism, the terrific discussion of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation--that is discussed here in a manner superior to any I′ve seen, the discussion of over-motivated students; the relation between self-esteem and self-efficacy, disabilities and language learning, and the provision of specific tips for learning vocabulary, grammar etc. The case studies are also wonderful. " Robert Sternberg, Department of Psychology Yale University "The case studies are among the most appealing characteristics of the book. They present readily identifiable, relatively easy-to-understand types of learners, and they include a vast range of possible types. The questions and prods related to the case studies are very valuable. The tables are very handy. I love the table on defense mechanisms and the chart about the intriguing metaphors for language learning." Rebecca L. Oxford, Ph.D, Area Head, Teacher Education University of Alabama Why is it so difficult for adults to learn a second language? How can we get to the source of these difficulties, diagnose the learner, and help them achieve their goals? Understanding Second Language Learning Difficulties addresses these questions, demonstrating some of the insights, techniques, and skills needed to understand adult students who are having problems learning a second language. Author Madeline E. Ehrman provides a deep examination of the source of difficulty, taking into consideration such issues as learning styles, personality dispositions, motivation, learning strategies, self-efficacy, and anxiety. Helpful summaries, case studies, and exercises are included, giving the reader a firm grasp of the complex issues involved. This new volume presents multiple theories and models for each of the cases discussed, showing the reader how to evaluate observations in terms of individual difference dimensions. Scholars, researchers, and professionals in linguistics, communication, English as a second language, as well as teachers and trainers will value the thorough examination, and unique viewpoints this book offers.

Thirteenth in the Service-Learning in Disciplines series, this book provides a sound approach to the many conceptual and methodological changes that have taken place in the teaching of languages and cultures. By reviewing the accomplishments of Spanish teachers and what theory informs us, the editors have compiled a series of suggestions to help students and teachers "connect with communities in order to facilitate learning with each other rather than about each other".

Internationalizing The Writing Center written by Noreen Groover Lape and has been published by Parlor Press LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-10 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Internationalizing the Writing Center provides a rationale, pedagogical plan, and administrative method for developing a multilingual writing center. The book incorporates work from writing center studies as well as second language acquisition studies, including English as a second language; English as a foreign language; second language writing; and foreign language writing. Author Noreen Lape draws on ten years of experience directing a multilingual writing center that offers writing tutoring in eleven languages, and she incorporates the voices and insights of foreign language writing tutors and faculty from surveys, interviews, and tutoring session reports. Lape begins by exploring the dominance of English-medium writing centers in a globalized world and arguing for the expansion of English-centric into multilingual writing centers. She then considers how tutor training differs when the writing center is multilingual as opposed to monolingual, and the writing is second language and foreign language as well as “native” language. The chapters on tutor training explore issues such as holistic tutoring, composing in a foreign language, the role of translating in the writing process, creating a positive learning environment, and developing intercultural competence. In multiple appendices, Lape shares original exercises that writing center administrators can use to train foreign language writing tutors. The book ends with a discussion of strategies for engaging faculty and administrators as stakeholders, and collaborating with those stakeholders to create a sustainable center.

The revised and enlarged second edition of J. Dudley Woodberry’s From Seed to Fruit expands on the next stage of the ongoing collaborative research and reflections of many people from many organizations desiring to bless Muslims. Seven additional chapters survey major trends in global Islam today and explore themes that prove to have considerable influence on fruitfulness, including a new chapter on building Christlike relationships with Muslims. The Global Trends Research Group has continued to update the demographic materials on Muslim people groups, their access to Christian witness, and when and how Christian groups covenant to provide meaningful access. From Seed to Fruit presents the most recent worldwide research on witness to Christ among Muslim peoples, using biblical images from nature to show the interaction between God's activity and human responsibility in blessing these peoples.
