Instruments And The Imagination written by Thomas L. Hankins and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-14 with Science categories.

Thomas Hankins and Robert Silverman investigate an array of instruments from the seventeenth through the nineteenth century that seem at first to be marginal to science--magnetic clocks that were said to operate by the movements of sunflower seeds, magic lanterns, ocular harpsichords (machines that played different colored lights in harmonious mixtures), Aeolian harps (a form of wind chime), and other instruments of "natural magic" designed to produce wondrous effects. By looking at these and the first recording instruments, the stereoscope, and speaking machines, the authors show that "scientific instruments" first made their appearance as devices used to evoke wonder in the beholder, as in works of magic and the theater. The authors also demonstrate that these instruments, even though they were often "tricks," were seen by their inventors as more than trickery. In the view of Athanasius Kircher, for instance, the sunflower clock was not merely a hoax, but an effort to demonstrate, however fraudulently, his truly held belief that the ability of a flower to follow the sun was due to the same cosmic magnetic influence as that which moved the planets and caused the rotation of the earth. The marvels revealed in this work raise and answer questions about the connections between natural science and natural magic, the meaning of demonstration, the role of language and the senses in science, and the connections among art, music, literature, and natural science. Originally published in 1995. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Eugene is remembering the summer of 1938 in Frenchtown, a time when he began to wonder “what I was doing here on the planet Earth.” Here in vibrant, exquisite detail are his lovely mother, his aunts and uncles, cousins and friends, and especially his beloved, enigmatic father. Here, too, is the world of a mill town: the boys swimming in a brook that is red or purple or green, depending on the dyes dumped that day by the comb shop; the visit of the ice man; and the boys’ trips to the cemetery or the forbidden railroad tracks. And here also is a darker world–the mystery of a girl murdered years before. Robert Cormier’s touching, funny, melancholy chronicle of a vanished world celebrates a son’s connection to his father and human relationships that are timeless.

Former CIA agent Charlie Brewer finds himself the bait in a trap set by the United States and Iran. “Best thriller I’ve read in years” (The Washington Post). Meet Robert McCall, a man sinking deep into the seamy underside of intelligence work, into activities he knows are both illegal and immoral. Now McCall sees a chance to redeem himself by thwarting a daring plot to smuggle America’s most lethal high-tech war material to Iran. It’s a chance he’s ready to kill for. The likely victim: Charlie Brewer, a brilliant, embittered former intelligence operative who is desperate for answers. He was framed for an illegal arms deal and doesn’t know why; he’s been released from prison and doesn’t know why; he thinks he’s been marked for murder and doesn’t know why. When Brewer is approached by Iran’s most ruthless secret agent, he realizes treason may be the price of survival. “Up there with The Day of the Jackal for consistently sustained excitement.” —Gregory McDonald “The pace is smoothly breakneck, the plot wonderfully intricate and clear, the characters richly diverse. The pleasure of this satisfying thriller is increased by its effective humor and some delicious twists at the end.” —Publishers Weekly
