The Hammer of Witches, known as Malleus Maleficarum, is a seminal text in the canon of witchcraft literature, co-authored by Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger in 1487. This treatise intricately intertwines legal discourse, ecclesiastical authority, and folk superstition, providing a systematic guide for the identification, prosecution, and punishment of witches. Employing a didactic literary style, the book legitimizes the inquisitorial methods of its time while reflecting the prevailing misogyny and fear-driven attitudes of the late medieval period, making it a pivotal work in understanding both the witch hunts and the cultural zeitgeist of Europe during this dark chapter in history. Heinrich Kramer, a Dominican friar and inquisitor, was deeply ingrained in the ecclesiastical hierarchy of his era, which profoundly influenced his perspectives on heresy and witchcraft. His involvement in the witch trials and his desire to combat what he perceived as a growing threat of witchcraft undoubtedly propelled him to co-author this controversial text. The Malleus Maleficarum emerged as both an indictment of superstition and a product of its time, reflecting the shifting societal attitudes towards women and the occult. This book is an indispensable resource for scholars of witchcraft, gender studies, and medieval history. Readers who seek to understand the complexities of early modern belief systems and the socio-political mechanisms underpinning the witch hunts will find Kramer's work both enlightening and challenging. The Hammer of Witches serves not only as a historical document but also as a cautionary tale about the intersections of fear, power, and society.

Witchcraft in Europe in Middle Ages and Early Modern Period was believed to be a combination of sorcery and heresy. While sorcery attempts to produce negative supernatural effects through formulas and rituals, heresy is the Christian contribution to witchcraft in which an individual makes a pact with the Devil. In addition, heresy denies witches the recognition of important Christian values such as baptism, salvation, Christ and sacraments. In Early Modern European tradition, witches were stereotypically, though not exclusively, women. European pagan belief in witchcraft was associated with the goddess Diana and dismissed as "diabolical fantasies" by medieval Christian authors. Witch-hunts first appeared in large numbers during the 14th and 15th centuries. It was commonly believed that individuals with power and prestige were involved in acts of witchcraft and even cannibalism. A manual of demonology and witchcraft from medieval Europe, the Malleus Maleficarum is an infamous treatise defining methods for identifying, interrogating, and executing supposed witches. 'Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.' (Exodus 22:18 KJV) First written and published in 1486 by German Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer, this treatise was republished with additions from a second author, Jacob Sprenger, in 1519. Used to persecute supposed practisers of witchcraft during the witch hunts of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Malleus Maleficarum is a haunting reminder of the deep-seated paranoia and religious fervour that led to the torture and deaths of many innocent people. One of history's most infamous texts, this handbook struck fear into the hearts of many and fuelled the flames of hysteria surrounding ideas of heresy, witchcraft, and the occult during the Middle Ages. This is the 1928 edition translated by the English occultist Montague Summers and featuring his original introduction.

Fever Devilin was raised amongst the hill-country people of the deep Georgia Appalachians and their seemingly simple folk ways are in his blood and his soul. His own family, however, was another matter and at sixteen he left home for college, returning only rarely and always under protest. In the years to come, Fever became a noted folklorist of the Appalachian region and a college professor. He never quite adjusted to the realities of city life and academic politics, and has now returned to the deceptively quiet life amongst his people. But below the surface, nothing is ever as quiet and simple as it appears. When Truevine Deveroe, a local girl reputed to be a witch, goes missing and the local mortician, acknowledged as an unpleasant character, turns up dead near Devilin's home, Able Carter, fiancé of the missing girl, is suspected of killing them both. Tied by friendship and long-term enmity to all of the principals, Fever finds himself in the midst of a very difficult situation. To make matters even worse, the brothers of the missing girl are determined to find Carter - who has taken it on the lam - and administer their own brand of justice. With precious little time, lives at stake, and a missing girl to be found, Devilin must unravel the mystery behind this perplexing series of events. A series of events somehow related to the hidden history of the area and the old folk legend of the witch's grave.
