The Witch of the North explains that there are good witches and evil witches. The Witches of the North and South are good, while those of the East and West are evil. She also mentions a Great Wizard named Oz. Dorothy asks the Witch of the North and the munchkins how to get home to Kansas. The Witch of the North tells her to follow the yellow brick road to Oz, as the Great Wizard might know what to do. She kisses Dorothy to grant hersafe passage for her journey to Oz. Before setting off on her journey, Dorothy changes into a blue gingham dress and the silver slippers. On her journey, Dorothy sees a Scarecrow in a field, who gives her a friendly wink. After her initial surprise, she helps the Scarecrow off his pole and introduces herself and explains where she is going. The Scarecrow asks to join Dorothy on her journey to Oz so that he can ask the wizard for a brain, instead of a head of straw. Dorothy, Toto, and the Scarecrow continue on their journey to Oz together. While drinking and bathing in a forest in a stream, a rusted Tin Woodman appears. The Tin Woodman is thrilled when Dorothy oils his joints and he can finally move again. After hearing that they are going to Oz, the Tin Woodman asks if he can join them to ask the Wizard of Oz for a heart. Joined now by the Tin Woodman, the group walks deeper into the frightening woods. A large lion jumps out and is about to attack Toto. Dorothy saves Toto by slapping the lion on his nose and yelling at him not to bite her dog. The Cowardly Lion apologizes and explains that to hide his cowardice he roars to scare everyone. He asks to join them on their journey to Oz to ask the wizard for courage. Dorothy, Toto and their three companions finally reach Oz and are taken to see the wizard one by one. Dorothy is captured and forced to work in the witch's kitchen. The witch wants Dorothy's powerful silver shoes, but cannot figure out how to take them from her. The witch trips Dorothy with an invisible bar, which causes a shoe to fall off. Angered, Dorothy throws a bucket of water on the witch which causes the witch to melt away. One of their numbers, a Munchkin named Bini Aru, discovered a method of transforming people and objects by merely saying the word "Pyrzqxgl". After Princess Ozma decreed that no one could practice magic in Oz except for Glinda the Good Witch and the Wizard of Oz, Bini wrote down the directions for pronouncing "Pyrzqxgl" and hid them in his magical laboratory and...where it was eventually discovered by his son Kiki Aru. Yearning for adventure, the boy changes himself into a hawk and flies beyond the edges of Oz. In Ev, he learns that he needs money for food and lodging at an inn (unlike Oz, here money is used). He becomes a magpie and steals a gold coin. When he is human again, a sparrow confronts him over his theft; Kiki says that he didn''t know evil before, but is glad he does now. This conversation is overheard by Ruggedo, the Nome who was exiled to the Earth''s surface in Tik-Tok of Oz, and he sees through Kiki Aru''s power a chance to get revenge on the people of Oz. Kiki changes himself and Ruggedo into birds and they fly over the Deadly Desert into the Land of Oz. They enter Oz as animals to escape detection by Glinda and to recruit an army of conquest from the country''s wild animal population! Dorothy, the Wizard of Oz, the Cowardly Lion, and the Hungry Tiger arrive in the Forest, looking for monkeys to train for Ozma''s approaching birthday party. Ruggedo recognizes his old enemies; a terrified Kiki starts transforming people and animals left and right. The Wizard becomes a fox, Dorothy a lamb; the Cowardly Lion is a little Munchkin boy, the Hungry Tiger a rabbit. And Ruggedo is now a goose. Kiki, in Li-Mon-Eag form, escapes with the Wizard''s black bag; but the foxy Wizard follows him, spies on him, and learns the correct pronunciation of Pyrzqxgl. The Wizard changes Kiki and Ruggedo into a walnut and a hickory nut, inactivating them; he restores all the transformed beings to their proper shapes. Meanwhile, Trot and Cap''n Bill have travelled to a magic island to obtain a special flower for Ozma''s birthday. They have a confrontation with a kalidah, and meet the Lonesome Duck. The island is dangerous: Trot and the Cap''n are magically rooted to the ground, and begin shrinking away to nothing. The Wizard manages to rescue them by turning them into honeybees. Back at the Emerald City, Ozma and her friends celebrate her birthday (though without quite the pomp and fanfare from The Road to Oz) and then decide how to deal with the evil magicians transformed into nuts. The Wizard uses "Pyrzqxgl" to change them back to Kiki Aru and Ruggedo and make them thirsty enough to drink the Water of Oblivion, which will make them forget all that they have ever known. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Originally published by the George M. Hill Company in Chicago on May 17, 1900, it has since been reprinted numerous times, most often under the name The Wizard of Oz, which is the name of both the popular 1902 Broadway musical and the well-known 1939 film adaptation. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a cyclone.[nb 1] The novel is one of the best-known stories in American popular culture and has been widely translated. Its initial success, and the success of the 1902 Broadway musical which Baum adapted from his original story, led to Baum's writing thirteen more Oz books. The original book has been in the public domain in the US since 1956. Baum dedicated the book "to my good friend & comrade, My Wife," Maud Gage Baum. In January 1901, George M. Hill Company, the publisher, completed printing the first edition, which totaled 10,000 copies.

Dorothy felt as if she were going up in a balloon.The north and south winds met where the house stood, and made it the exact center of the cyclone. In the middle of a cyclone the air is generally still, but the great pressure of the wind on every side of the house raised it up higher and higher, until it was at the very top of the cyclone; and there it remained and was carried miles and miles away as easily as you could carry a feather.It was very dark, and the wind howled horribly around her, but Dorothy found she was riding quite easily.
