Excerpt from The Woman Doctor and Her Future It is, I believe, some years since any history of the work of Women Doctors has been offered to the public. In sending this little volume out into the world, I have been actuated by a desire to review frankly and if possible justly the work of the Woman Doctor, her position in society, her value to medical science, and above all her value to mankind. Her inherent qualities of intuition and endurance, her strength of mind when it comes to a conflict between the choice of present and evanescent happiness and the ultimate practical good of the race; her unexpected unemotionalism in those important crises in which definite and decided action has to be taken; her steadfast and almost dogged determination in face of unjust opposition - these qualities one learns to appreciate and value, marked as they have been in all the more distinguished and eminent women of the profession. That she possesses a place in the medical world which only she can fill, I think one cannot doubt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dr. Gloria Schrager has written a revealing memoir about her struggle to become a doctor at a time when women physicians were an anomaly. The era she has lived through has been incredibly eventful: she relates how the Great Depression, World War II, the McCarthy Unamerican Activities Committee, the overt bias and harassment that women in the professions had to face, all impacted on her life. But the memoir has a lighter side, recounting some of the adventures and mishaps of medical school, internship, maintaining a successful marriage and raising a family while engaged in the full-time practice of medicine. Both of her sons as well as a niece and grandniece have become physicians, and the book describes some the differences, both good and bad, between the practice of medicine today and how it was practiced over fifty years ago.

A friend once said to her, ‘If I wished to increase your height two and a half inches, I would attempt to press you down, and you would grow upward from sheer resentment.’ Divorced at eighteen from an abusive husband in 1859 (scandalous at the time), and with a little baby to care for, Bethenia Angelina Owens was determined to make her way in the world. Her family begged her to let them support her but she wanted to earn her own livelihood. Taking in laundry, teaching school, and making cheese were among the tasks she set herself to. She eventually built a thriving business as a milliner that allowed her to send her son to college and to fulfill her own dream of becoming a doctor. Against all odds and a tidal wave of objections by friends, family, and male doctors, she prevailed. Despite the sentiment of the times that it was disgraceful for a woman to practice medicine, she enrolled in 1878 at the University of Michigan. By 1884, she was making $7,000 per year, an astronomical sum, as a physician. For all of her life she was a strong and vocal advocate of women's rights. As a doctor, she gave the shocking advice, "Nothing will preserve woman’s grace and her symmetrical form so much as vigorous and systematic exercise, and horseback riding stands at the head of the list, providing she has a foot in each stirrup, instead of having the right limb twisted around a horn." She also provides accounts of other pioneer women of her acquaintance. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE by clicking the cover above. The Devil S Dominion written by Richard Godbeer and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with History categories.

The Devil's Dominion examines the use of folk magic by ordinary men and women in early New England. The book describes in vivid detail the magical techniques used by settlers and the assumptions which underlaid them. Godbeer argues that layfolk were generally far less consistent in their beliefs and actions than their ministers would have liked; even church members sometimes turned to magic. The Devil's Dominion reveals that the relationship between magical and religious belief was complex and ambivalent: some members of the community rejected magic altogether, but others did not. Godbeer argues that the controversy surrounding astrological prediction in early New England paralleled clerical condemnation of magical practice, and that the different perspectives on witchcraft engendered by magical tradition and Puritan doctrine often caused confusion and disagreement when New Englanders sought legal punishment of witches.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! For fans of Hidden Figures and Radium Girls comes the remarkable story of three Victorian women who broke down barriers in the medical field to become the first women doctors, revolutionizing the way women receive health care. In the early 1800s, women were dying in large numbers from treatable diseases because they avoided receiving medical care. Examinations performed by male doctors were often demeaning and even painful. In addition, women faced stigma from illness—a diagnosis could greatly limit their ability to find husbands, jobs or be received in polite society. Motivated by personal loss and frustration over inadequate medical care, Elizabeth Blackwell, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Sophia Jex-Blake fought for a woman’s place in the male-dominated medical field. For the first time ever, Women in White Coats tells the complete history of these three pioneering women who, despite countless obstacles, earned medical degrees and paved the way for other women to do the same. Though very different in personality and circumstance, together these women built women-run hospitals and teaching colleges—creating for the first time medical care for women by women. With gripping storytelling based on extensive research and access to archival documents, Women in White Coats tells the courageous history these women made by becoming doctors, detailing the boundaries they broke of gender and science to reshape how we receive medical care today.
