Several features of the story of the encounter between Jesus and a Syrophoenician woman (Mk 7,24-30) are unique within the Second Gospel: the stress on the woman's identity, Jesus' first refusal to help her, the woman's answer recorded in direct speech, and the fact that Jesus does not seem to expel the demon. This monograph seeks to cast light on the pericope by taking recourse to both diachronic and synchronic methods. It begins with the history of the interpretation of Mk 7,24-30 par. Mt 15,21-28, starting from the patristic period. The ensuing historical-critical study of the Markan text includes an examination of the literary relationship with the Matthean parallel and paves the way for an analysis of Matthew's redaction and his position vis-a-vis Judaism and the Gentile world. The book ends with a synchronic and contextual reading of Mk 7,24-30 attentive to its placement in the Gospel in order to reach the final stage of interpretation.

Much of the history of women, in religion as in other fields, is lost because it was overlooked or considered unimportant. It is therefore surprising that so many fragments of women's stories survive in the New Testament texts composed by men. Why did they include so many references to women and why are women, as a group, treated so positively by the male New Testament writers? Women in the New Testament shows how the stories of women are an integral part of the Gospel and its meaning for us. It also relays how we can respond to the challenge these women represent, whether we are men trying to understand or women trying to find our voices within the tradition of faith found in the New Testament. Chapter one discusses three women of expectant faith. Chapters two and three deal with women who are changed by Jesus. Chapter four focuses on New Testament women of influence. Chapters five and six show how women disciples spread and gave shape to the gospel message. Chapters are "Women of Expectant Faith," “Women Changed by Jesus,” “More Women Changed by Jesus,” “Women of Prominence,” “Women and Discipleship,” and “More Women and Discipleship.” Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan, PhD, teaches at St. Vincent College and St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, Pennsylvania. She is the author of First and Second Corinthians from the Collegeville Bible Commentary series, author of the God Speaks to Us series of children's books, and editor of the Zacchaeus Studies: New Testament series published by The Liturgical Press. The Divine Role of Woman in God’s creation stipulates that the woman occupies an important place in the mind of God and man ought to appreciate this truth. The divine role of women confirms the important bond between mother and child, since the survival of the foetus depends solely on the motherhood. The mother to a large extent connects the human body, all growth and changes as well as continuity. She is the mother who brings forth life. She is the power of fertility and generation. She receives the seed into her womb, the first home of every human being. The woman has been given the divine power to help man succeed in life. The role of the mother is to influence people positively, her entire family. It is a blessing and a responsibility to nurture and sustain the family. The two women who changed the world history are Eve and Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus. For God to send His son to save the world, He chose the Virgin Mary as a perfect medium to bring forth Jesus Christ, His son into the world that through Him the whole world would be saved. The mystery is that it took the wisdom of a woman to bring a rebellious son back to his father. It is the duty of mothers to bring their vagabond children back to their fathers. We do not have to scare them away, but rather our wisdom as women to bring such children back home. The mother is the manager of the home. How we manage the home is really important in the upbringing of our children in the fear of the Lord.
