Excerpt from The Women of Mormonism: Or the Story of Polygamy as Told by the Victims Themselves With an earnest desire to have some part in the great work of redeeming the large, beautiful, and populous Territory of Utah from the tyrannical and degrading evil which holds it in its mighty grasp, and which is ruining the souls and bodies of thousands of men and women, the publisher sends forth this work. He is confident that it will impart information which will astonish its readers, and hopes it will exert no small influence in molding public opinion, and thus lead to an energetic demand upon Congress for right and efficient legislation, and direct the sympathies of the people to some practical end, in increasing the means of the various "redeeming agencies" that are operating in Utah and the adjacent territories. In order to give the work the greatest possible circulation, it will be sold only by subscription. Every effort has been made to have it thoroughly accurate and reliable, and to issue it in an attractive style. The illustrations are chiefly portraits of some of the most prominent persons who are working in various ways for the redemption of the inhabitants of Utah from the terrible bondage in which they are held, and have been engraved expressly for this work, at great expense. Escaped Nuns written by Cassandra L. Yacovazzi and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-21 with Religion categories.

Just five weeks after its publication in January 1836, Awful Disclosures of the Hotel Dieu Nunnery, billed as an escaped nun's shocking exposé of convent life, had already sold more than 20,000 copies. The book detailed gothic-style horror stories of licentious priests and abusive mothers superior, tortured nuns and novices, and infanticide. By the time the book was revealed to be a fiction and the author, Maria Monk, an imposter, it had already become one of the nineteenth century's best-selling books. In antebellum America only one book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, outsold it. The success of Monk's book was no fluke, but rather a part of a larger phenomenon of anti-Catholic propaganda, riots, and nativist politics. The secrecy of convents stood as an oblique justification for suspicion of Catholics and the campaigns against them, which were intimately connected with cultural concerns regarding reform, religion, immigration, and, in particular, the role of women in the Republic. At a time when the term "female virtue" pervaded popular rhetoric, the image of the veiled nun represented a threat to the established American ideal of womanhood. Unable to marry, she was instead a captive of a foreign foe, a fallen woman, a white slave, and a foolish virgin. In the first half of the nineteenth century, ministers, vigilantes, politicians, and writers--male and female--forged this image of the nun, locking arms against convents. The result was a far-reaching antebellum movement that would shape perceptions of nuns, and women more broadly, in America.

Divorce written by Glenda Riley and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-01-01 with Social Science categories.

According to Glenda Riley, “the historical conflict between anti-divorce and pro-divorce factions has prevented the development of effective, beneficial divorce laws, procedures, and policies. Today we still lack processes that move spouses out of unworkable marriages in a constructive fashion and get them back into the mainstream of life in a stable, productive condition.” Her pioneering historical overview offers proposals for dealing with a subject that now pertains to nearly half of all marriages.
