Language is a Developmental, social and cultural phenomenon. When Urdu started its literary journey, writing also treasured it and today we are proud of the great collection of Urdu books. Urdu lovers have also done a remarkable job in writing books on various topics and in conveying the standard writings to the Urdu circles by giving them solid ink. This book although written in English, is one such masterpiece by Krishna S. Dhir. However, it clearly reflects the love of the writer for the Urdu language and its literature. The beginning of this book is an excellent illustration of how the various apabhransha of South Asia interacted with Perso-Arabic and European languages, to give rise to various languages, including Urdu and how they grew up through the time of the Mughals and the British. How all the major religions of the world originated in the Asian continent and the observation of Sufis are highlighted in the second chapter of this book. The role of social and economic institutions and traditions in the evolution of Urdu has been shed light upon. Krishna S. Dhir has painstakingly elaborated upon the protest literature and extensively quoted Mir, Ghalib, Daagh Dehlvi, Sahir Ludhianvi, Faiz Ahmad, Ahmad Fraz and other poets to prove how Urdu poetry has been used to protest against siege, raids, imprisonment, imperialism and colonisation, and to express love and peace. Finally, the writer explores how Urdu is deployed by the diaspora that uses it.

The full translations of the stories have been extensively annotated to point out the details in which the Hindi and Urdu versions differ. An overview of early and contemporary Hindi/Urdu and Hindustani grammars and language teaching textbooks demonstrates the problems of correctly naming and identifying the two languages. This book now offers a detailed and systematic database of syntactic, morphological and semantic differences between the selected Hindi and Urdu stories. A useful tool for all scholars of modern Hindi/Urdu fiction, (socio-)linguistics, history or social sciences.

In Confessions of a Secular Fundamentalist, Mani Shankar Aiyar, crusader for a secular credo, calls for an unambiguous and decisive restoration of secularism to the core of our nationhood. In doing so, he revisits every dimension of our secular ethos and exposes the various myths perpetuated by communal elements of all hues. Putting under the scanner contentious issues like conversions, uniform civil code and Article 370, he nails the falsehood underlying terms like 'pseudo-secularism', 'appeasement' and 'soft Hindutva'. And he places the domestic debate over secularism in India in the wider external dimension by discussing the experiences of countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Israel and erstwhile Yugoslavia. Admitting to wearing his secularism on his sleeve, Aiyar reasons that only a determined and inflexible adherence to secularism can counter religious bigotry and fundamentalism. Clear in his convictions, with history, logic and persuasive argument at his command, this is Mani Shankar Aiyar at his best, on a subject that we can ignore only at our own peril.

The Greatest Urdu Stories Ever Told written by Muhammad Umar Memon and has been published by Rupa Publications India Pvt Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Short stories, Urdu categories.

Selected and translated by writer, editor and translator par excellence Muhammad Umar Memon, the twenty-five stories in this book represent the finest short fiction in Urdu literature. In his Introduction, Memon traces the evolution of the Urdu short story from its origins in the work of writers like Munshi Premchand-'the first professional short story writer in Urdu'-through the emergence of the Progressives in the late 1930s, whose writings were unabashedly political and underpinned their Marxist ideologies, to the post-Independence 'Modernist' era, and today's generation of avant-garde, experimental writers of Urdu fiction. Every story in the anthology illustrates one or the other facet of the form in the Urdu literary tradition. But even more than for their formal technique and inventiveness, these stories have been included because of their power and impact on the reader. Death and poverty face off in Premchand's masterpiece

English and those transliterated and translated by the author from Urdu is his favorite language for using poetry as an apt mode of creative self-expression in the area of literary arts. Apart from their lyrical value, these verses on diverse subjects and themes carry the author’s philosophic outlook that persistently puts his highly individualized experiences in the universal context, making him a modern-day rishi (seer) of far-reaching consequence. His life’s oeuvre is distinguished by its enormity of quantum, originality, sustained high quality, and amazing versatility—all couched in what he calls holistic humanism. He insists that we humans must wean consciousness from money mindedness to moneyed mindedness as their own pathfinders to the realm of life’s spiritual realities. This anthology has substantial material of diversity that will benefit the modern-day youth in getting rid of many illusions that cloud human wits and prevent us from seeing God’s most precious gift (the soul) lodged inside the eye-catching wrappings (body) that mislead us into blind alleys of maverick ambition. It is not unlikely that it will inspire some to discover their own native creativity and conscientiously develop it to its full potential.

This short anthology contains a selection of short stories originally written in Urdu in the Indo-Pak sub-continent, translated into English by Khalid Sayyed. These stories are taken from some of the best-known names of Urdu literature, including Munshi Prem Chand, S'aadat Hasan Manto, Krishen Chandra, Ghulam Abbas, Rajindra Singh Bedi, Asmat Chughtai, Intezaar Hussain, Qurrat al Ain Haider and Ahmed Nadeem Qasemi. Each writer is unique in his or her style, but all of them are bound by a common history, since they were all born in British India in the early part of the 20th century, and witnessed the events of the 1947 Partition that saw the creation of two independent states, India and Pakistan. For many of these writers, the events and politics surrounding Partition provided the impetus for stories that condemned political corruption and exploitation. Others have written tales about ordinary men and women and the challenges they faced in traditional rural life. At any rate, every story in this collection appeals universally to the heart and our sense of wonder and awe about human nature. Each story is also annotated in order to explain cultural concepts or Urdu words that are not directly translated in the text. This allows for the retention of some Urdu terms in order to be faithful to the cultural setting of the stories, without alienating readers who are not familiar with such terms. The title of this collection is inspired by the renowned A Thousand and One Arabian Nights since, like the tales in this collection, it also contains a wide variety of stories tied together in one place. Translated and annotated by Khalid Sayyed. With sketches by Afsana Z Sayyed.
