Excerpt from The Wool Situation: August 1961 The outlook for the world wool industry for the coming marketing year is encouraging. World stocks of raw wool and wool products are relatively low. Prices are firm, with the trade expecting moderate increases in world prices with the opening of the 1961-62 marketing season. World wool production and consumption are at record high levels. Mill activity in most of the major manufacturing countries is be ginning to increase after declining during the latter part of 1960. Technological advances and increased promotional activity may partially offset the increasing inter-fiber competition. The domestic wool industry has partially recovered from the short-term recession of late 1960 and early 1961. Mill activity, although below year earlier levels, is increasing. Average prices received by producers are lower than last year at the same time. Imports of wool products are less than a year ago; exports, up moderately. Imports of raw wool are slightly above the relatively low level of the same period last year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Wool Situation: January 1953 Following the beginning of the decline in early 1951, growers in Argentina and Uruguay were reluctant to sell at prices prevailing in foreign markets. The Argentine government, late last July, lifted the export tax and revised the exchange rate for exports of greasy and scoured wool for the remainder of the year. The preferential exchange rate has been extended indefinitely and the export tax exemption to June 30, 1953. The export tax exemption applies to all wool exports, but the preferential exchange rate applies only to dollar and sterling sales, Prices declined at the London auctions late in July and at the opening sales of the current season in Australia early last September (table At the Opening sales in Australia at that time prices of fine wools ranged between 5 and 10 percent below the closing prices of the pre vious season in June but were between 15 and 20 percent above the low levels of March. After the September decline, prices again trended slowly upward. During the Opening week of post holiday sales in Australia, prices of fine wools were 2 to 5 percent above those of the pre-holiday closing sales. Following an announcement that an additional bales of Australian wool would be offered at the auctions during the remainder of the season, prices declined during the next week to slightly below pre-holiday levels. However, they tended to strengthen during the following week and in early February were 25 to 35 percent, degending on type, above last March. Excerpt from The Wool Situation: November 11, 1937 Most factors in the wool situation now indie prices in 1938 may average lower than in 1937, according to the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Wool prices are now rather high in relation to prices of other textile materials. World supplies of wool in 1938 probably will be slightly larger than in the present year, the Bureau points out; although they will be below average. Mill consumption of wool in this country and possibly in some foreign countries in 1938 is expected to be smaller than in the present year. The total supply of apparel wool in the United States on October 1 was estimated to be about 15 percent larger than a year earlier, but it was smaller than in a number of other recent years. Since stocks of such wool held by dealers and manufacturers in late September Were only about 5 percent larger than a year earlier, the quantity of wool held in the producing States on October I apparently was larger than on October 1 last year. At the beginning of October apparent supplies of wool for the 1937-38 selling season in the five principal wool-producing countries of the Southern Hemisphere were slightly larger than a year earlier, but they were slightly smaller than the average for early October inthe five preceding years. Although wool production in these five countries in 1937 was tentatively estimated to be about 3 percent larger than that of last year.
