Since the first appearance of this bibliography (1934, Oxford Uni versity Press), which has long been out of print, so much attention has been paid to Berkeley that a mere reprint would be inept. Besides bringing it up to date I have added collations of those editions of Berkeley's writings that were published in his lifetime. In doing so I have used a form of description simple enough for anyone to follow yet sufficient to enable librarians to check their catalogues and to identify copies in which the titlepage is missing or mutilated. As before, I have marked with an asterisk throughout the bibliography every book, edition and article that has not been seen by me or, in a few cases, by a competent friend. My primary interest not being bibliographical in the present-day highly technical sense, but philosophical, I have aimed chiefly at (a) providing advanced students (and their hard-pressed advisers) of Berkeley, or of the subjects on which he wrote, with a guide to the materials for research, and (b) displaying the range in time and place, and the direction, of the attention which he has attracted. These two aims account for the classification of the entries under a few general subject-headings and of the philosophical entries under countries, and for the arranging of the entries in each section or subsection in chrono logical order, the alphabetical ordering of the authors' names being given in the Index. To facilitate reference and cross-reference each entry is numbered.

This volume focuses on Berkeley’s doctrine of signs. The ‘doctrine of signs’ refers to the use that Berkeley makes of a phenomenon that is central to a great deal of everyday discourse: one whereby certain perceivable entities are made to stand in for (as ‘signs’ of) something else. Things signified might be other perceivable entities or they might also be unperceivable notions – such as the meanings of words. From his earliest published work, A New Theory of Vision in 1710, to those works written towards the end of life, including Alciphron in 1732, Berkeley is at pains to emphasise the crucial role that sign-usage, particularly (but not only) in language, plays in human life. Berkeley also connects sign-usage to our (human) relationship with God: an issue that was right of the heart of his philosophical project. The contributions in this volume explore the myriad ways that Berkeley built on such insights to better understand a range of philosophical issues – issues of epistemology, language, perception, mental representation, mathematics, science, and theology. The aim of this volume is to establish that the doctrine of signs can be seen as one of the unifying themes of Berkeley’s philosophy. What’s more, this theme is one which spans his whole philosophical corpus; not just his best-known works like the Principles and the Three Dialogues, but also his works on science, mathematics, and theology.

This thesis describes the origins and development of the concept of ‘attention’. An introductory chapter reviews the relevant extant literature; including an overview of modern theoretical framework provided Richards (1989; 1992) and Danziger (1997) and the research most comparable to the current project by Smith (1992), Kaufmann (2000) and Goldstein (2000); from which a set of foundational protocols is derived. It is argued that ‘attention’ as a reified concept of reflexive discourse does not emerge in Western literature until the 17th century and only after three distinct discursive traditions have waned in influence. Moreover, it is argued that ‘attention’, in any discursive form, is fundamentally an artefact of the physiomorphic assimilation of the practice of reading. The second chapter deals with the earliest characterisations of ‘attention’, from an intersubjective perspective, as a practice conducive to the living of a philosophically sound life. From these beginnings, two separate traditions emerge concurrently. On one hand, from a projective perspective, ‘attention’ is characterised as an aspect of another person’s subjectivity, to be influenced by certain means. This perspective, heavily associated with oratory, is dealt with in chapters four and six. On the other hand, from a subjective perspective, ‘attention’ is characterised as universal to all people and part of one’s subjective relationship with God and the world in general. This perspective, heavily associated with religion, is dealt with in chapters three, five and seven. Both of these perspectives are seen to decline in influence in the early sixteenth century, with the rise of humanistic and natural philosophical influences. These developments, the establishment of a conceptual approach to reflexive discourse and ‘attention’ are treated in chapters eight and nine, where a concept qua object of ‘attention’ is seen to emerge. The final chapter summarises and concludes with a rebuttal of possible objections to this thesis, some general and specific derivations, and implications of the current research for future scholarship. Throughout the thesis an attempt is made to appreciate each occurrence of the object term in its discursive context, and the author’s social, political, philosophical, religious and economic circumstances. Fundamental to the development of the concept of ‘attention’, is however, the author’s specific literary practices.
