Challenges Of Mapping The Classical World written by Richard J.A. Talbert and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-04 with History categories.

Challenges of Mapping the Classical World collects together in one volume fourteen varied items written by Richard Talbert over the past thirty years. They cohere around the theme of mapping the classical world since the nineteenth century. All were originally prompted by Talbert’s commission in the late 1980s to produce a definitive classical atlas after more than a century of failed attempts by the Kieperts and others. These he evaluates, as well as probing the Smith/Grove atlas, a successful twenty-year initiative launched in the mid-1850s, with a cartographic approach that departs radically from established practice. Talbert’s initial vision for the international collaborative project that resulted in the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World (2000) is presented, and the successive twice-yearly reports on its progress from 1991 through to completion are published here for the first time. A further item reflects retrospectively on the project’s cartographic challenges and on how developments in digital map production were decisive in overcoming them. This volume will be invaluable to anyone with an interest in the development and growing impact of mapping the classical world.

Excerpt from A Classical Atlas, to Illustrate Ancient Geography: Comprised in Twenty-Five Maps, Showing the Various Divisions of the World as Known to the Ancients; Composed From the Most Authentic Sources; With an Index of the Ancient and Modern Names IN the representation of Ancient Geography there is this disadvantage, that we use authorities, in many cases incomplete and mutilated in themselves, treating of subjects which frequently were very imperfectly known to their authors. It is true that very often the ancient writings are so lucid and explicit that we are compelled to acknowledge our inferiority in knowledge, and modern enterprise is continually r -dis'covering (so to speak) that which was perfectly familiar in the early ages and although, in many instances, we are enabled to follow their narratives and descriptions even to the most minute particulars, and apply them to existing facts yet, to make a complete picture of the countries at me period, we are compelled to fill up many vacancies, and supply many features from less clear and correct sources. The progress of Modern Geography may be said to be nothing more than the correction of errors this remark will still more fully apply to Ancient Geography. We are continually receiving fresh accessions to the illustration of the ancient writings, and it therefore takes rather the character of a progressive science than of a fixed branch of knowledge. A single fact will often overturn a voluminous theory, - a pebble 'will determine the character of a stratum to the geologist, and a coin or a column may completely subvert our previous notions of the comparative geography of a district.
