Wherever you are in the world there are fish that can be caught on the fly. It may be in the all-too-brief summer of the high arctic or the blistering heat of the tropics. It could be among the classical surroundings of an English chalk stream or the rugged grandeur of Tierra del Fuego in South America. The fish themselves may be stunningly huge or devilishly cunning. Some may be truly beautiful and others rather bland, but they are all part of the magical world of the fly fisher who wants nothing more than to cast concoctions of fur, feather and synthetics. Within this book are flies to inspire you to stretch your fly fishing boundaries or maybe to bring new ideas to your home patch. The author aims to give working flies for every situation throughout the world where it is possible to fly fish. Book jacket.

Hemingway would have been impressed. In a stunning combination of superb color images and literary yet lively personal essays, celebrated angling photojournalist Roy Tanami chronicles his adventures to far-flung fly-fishing destinations in some of the most remote wilderness areas on the planet. Angling the World takes us along on amazing excursions to ten of the world's top fly-fishing destinations. We seek out steelhead on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula; sea-run Arctic char in Nunavut, Canada; peacock bass and piranha in the Amazon jungle of Brazil; and brown trout on New Zealand's South Island. That's not to mention the fabled giant taimen of Mongolia, “one of the undisputed holy grail species for the serious, been there/done that, traveling fly angler.” This member of the salmon family can weigh in at almost 200 pounds—and, yes, can “strike suddenly and often in a highly violent manner.” There's drama around every bend in the river, with thoughts on conservation woven effortlessly in, as Tanami examines the ways in which traveling anglers can help save not only wild fish but also the wild places they inhabit. Written with keen observation, wit, and verve, and interspersed with fascinating tidbits of historical and geographical lore, Angling the World is a passport to a world of extraordinary angling adventure. Conveying the full awe and wonderment, enthusiasm and reflection of a consummate storyteller who also knows just how to capture his catch on film, it will have all anglers hooked—even if, while dreaming of distant waters, they're curled up on the couch. From the introduction: Wandering the globe to fish is every bit as good as it sounds, and the outrageous fishing is just a part of it. All of fly fishing's considerably powerful seductions—the quest for adventure and discovery; meeting new challenges, people, and environments; and the pleasures of being in direct contact with the elemental, pristine, and most beautiful aspects of nature—are amplified in the extreme and exotic edges of the world.

It addresses dry flies, wet flies, nymphs, stoneflies, mayflies, and caddisflies. The second section of the book thoroughly attends to the simulation of other insect orders, such as terrestrials and crustaceans, and then delves into the specifics of streamers, shad flies, steelhead flies, and more. Terry Hellekson was born into the world of fly-fishing and spent his early life in Happy Camp, California, where his father had a fly-fishing guide service on the Klamath and Trinity rivers during the 1940s and 1950s. Hellekson not only fly-fished and tied flies as a youth, but he developed many new fly patterns and eventually became immersed in all phases of the fly-fishing and fly-tying businesses. He founded Fly Fishing Specialties, a wholesale and retail business. He continually exchanges information with leading experts in fly-fishing and fly tying. Hellekson has traveled the world discovering sources for fly-tying materials and other products that he sold on the international market. He has also fished many of the great lakes and rivers of the world, traveling to such far off places as Kashmir to test the waters of the Himalayas. Hellekson is one of the founders of the Northern Utah Fly Fishers and the Granite Bay Fly Casters in northern California. Through fly-tying classes and fly-fishing clinics, he has taught countless numbers of fly fishers the fine points of the sporting art. Besides the many articles he has written on fly-fishing and fly tying, he has authored two books, Popular Fly Patterns (1976) and Fish Flies (1995), with this revised edition the culmination of a lifetime of work. He has also made generous contributions to the works of other authors. He now lives and fishes with his wife, Patricia, in Montana, where they have the famous Kootenai River at their doorstep.
