Farro Fescu is the proud and observant concierge of Echo Terrace, a condominium in New York City. Passing through his lobby at all hours is an exotic cross-section of the world's population: an Egyptian-born plastic surgeon who specializes in gender reassignment, a fighter pilot who flew for Nazi Germany during World War II, an Iraqi spice merchant and the world-famous quilter with whom he's having an affair, the adulterer's son who dreams of becoming an undertaker, and the widow whose apartment is a jungle Eden filled with a menagerie of specimens. Farro Fescu knows them all, knows all their secrets. Yet he does not know what is in his own heart -- why, after a long, hard life, he is still alive, and still alone. Nor does he know what he will be capable of in the face of sudden, overwhelming tragedy. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Land of Two Rivers chronicles the story of one of the most fascinating and influential regions in the Indian subcontinent. The confluence of two major river systems, Ganga and Brahmaputra, created the delta of Bengal--an ancient land known as a center of trade, learning and the arts from the days of the Mahabharata and through the ancient dynasties. During the medieval era, this eventful journey saw the rise of Muslim dynasties which brought into being a unique culture, quite distinct from that of northern India. The colonial conquest in the eighteenth century opened the modern chapter of Bengal's history and transformed the social and economic structure of the region. Nitish Sengupta traces the formation of Bengali identity through the Bengal Renaissance, the growth of nationalist politics and the complex web of events that eventually led to the partition of the region in 1947, analyzing why, despite centuries of shared history and culture, the Bengalis finally divided along communal lines. The struggle of East Pakistan to free itself from West Pakistan's dominance is vividly described, documenting the economic exploitation and cultural oppression of the Bengali people. Ultimately, under the leadership of Bangabandhu Mujibur Rahman, East Pakistan became the independent nation of Bangladesh in 1971. Land of Two Rivers is a scholarly yet extremely accessible account of the development of Bengal, sketching the eventful and turbulent history of this ancient civilization, rich in scope as well as in influence.

Still wracked with sorrow over the loss of his life-long love and plagued by his role in a brutal crime, he searches for absolution. Then one fall day, a train derails in Two Rivers. Rivers of the World, vividly written and meticulously researched, is a rich and thorough treatment of some 200 of the world's rivers. In this comprehensive treatment of the major rivers of the world, author James R. Penn's purpose is not just to feature geographic data, but to tell a story of historical drama, poetic significance, and cultural relationships. The book shows glimpses of Chairman Mao boosting his image by swimming in the Yangtze; Indian middlemen residing on both sides of the Columbia River exacting tolls from travelers like Lewis and Clark; and, near the Dordogne in southwest France, Paleolithic cave art, paintings, and designs in rock shelters and subterranean caverns, which are textbook examples of early human creativity and artistic impulse. In nearly 200 entries ranging from a few paragraphs to several pages, Rivers of the World covers all of the great rivers of the world including the Nile, Niger, Amazon, and Mississippi, as well as smaller waterways that illustrate important themes or represent trends. The book includes bibliographies for each river.

Two Rivers, a World Apart is an autobiography of a young boy who spent most of his life by the banks of two rivers, namely the Pigalo River in his native country, the Philippines, and Ohio River in continental USA, where he took permanent residence and eventual retirement. Both served as the backdrop of the story of a young boy searching for the American dream. Against all odds like his sufferings and difficulties both financially and otherwise, he managed to overcome them through sheer determination and hard work. Above all, he believes that his deep belief and trust in the Almighty has propelled him to higher accomplishments. His boyhood pledge to give back to his community as well as to the poor people in his native country was fulfilled by using as a platform his membership with the oldest and greatest service organization in the world, the Rotary International and Rotary Foundation. Through his affiliations, Operation We Care was born, and he was able to carry out over thirty years of medical/surgical/dental missions in the different islands of the Philippines with his team of surgeons, doctors, nurses, and health-care givers. These are in addition to his unceasing efforts to donate surgical equipment and hospital supplies and construct several deep water wells in villages to curtail gastrointestinal diseases. He also helps in literacy and feeding programs for undernourished schoolchildren. For his work, he was recognized not only by the Rotary International and Rotary Foundation but also by five previous presidents of the Philippines. A few establishments were named after him, such as the Dr. Mel P. Simon and Lydia Chemistry Lab at the University of Rio Grande, the surgical ward of the Region One Medical Center in Dagupan, Philippines. He was also nominated for the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame on May 24, 2010, by the Ohio State governor for establishing the French 500 Free Clinic (a project with five volunteer physicians, nurses, health-care givers to extend help to poor, uninsured, or underinsured patients).
