Silver Medal Winner, 2024 Axiom Business Book Award, Personal Finance / Retirement Planning / Investing The market for art can be as eye-catching as artworks themselves. Works by artists from da Vinci and Rembrandt to Picasso and Modigliani have sold for hundreds of millions of dollars. The world’s ultrawealthy increasingly treat art as part of their portfolios. Since artworks are often valuable assets, how should financial professionals analyze them? Arturo Cifuentes and Ventura Charlin provide an expert guide to the methods, risks, and rewards of investing in art. They detail how to apply the financial and statistical tools and techniques used to evaluate more traditional investments such as stocks, bonds, and real estate to art markets. The Worth of Art: Financial Tools for the Art Markets shows readers how to use empirical evidence to answer questions such as: How do the returns on Basquiat compare to the S&P 500? Are Monet’s portraits as valuable as his landscapes? Do red paintings fetch higher prices than blue ones, and does the color palette matter equally to the sales of abstract Rothkos and figurative Hockneys? How much should be loaned to a borrower who is pledging one of Joan Mitchell’s late abstract paintings as collateral? Would the risk-return profile of a conventional portfolio benefit from exposure to Warhol? Rigorous and readable, this book also demonstrates how quantitative analysis can deepen aesthetic appreciation of art.

$136 million for a Klimt, $71.7 million for an Andy Warhol...It's not that art is expensive, but rather that money has become cheap for certain collectors--Russian oligarchs, Chinese, and American hedge-fund managers. Collections are being redistributed to new fortunes around the world. Sophisticated marketing campaigns, the most luxurious parties, a new wealthy elite passionate about art cross paths to compete for paintings now considered trophies. At present, details like "who's selling what" and "which auction house is organizing the sale" play an important role in sums fetched. The goal is paradoxical: always pay more. Worth of Art (2) offers an inside and outside view on an art world nourished by excess. AUTHOR After studying international law and political science, journalist Judith Benhamou-Huet became an expert in the art market. She pens the weekly column on the subject at Échos and at Le Point, as well as a monthly column for ArtPress. She has compiled several large reports on art for Art & Auction, the Swiss daily Neue Zurcher Zeitung, the magazine Beaux-Arts and Vogue France. She has organized many symposiums on the art market, most recently in Shangai, addressing business men as art collectors. The editor of Elle Accessories, Kelly Killoren Bensimon is also the author of American Style and In the Spirit of the Hamptons at Assouline Publishing. ILLUSTRATIONS 150 illustrations

On the tenth anniversary of its publication, this upated edition of a work ARTNews hailed as “one of the best books ever published on the art world” features new material on the latest art deals, reflections on race and culture, the impact of the pandemic on the art world, and more. Internationally renowned dealer and market expert Michael Findlay offers a lively and authoritative look at the financial and emotional value of art throughout history. In this newly revised, updated, and generously illustrated edition Findlay draws on a half-century in the business and a passion for great art to question and redefine what we mean by “value,” addressing developments in this conversation since the book was first published in 2012: the rise of NFTs and digital art; the auction house as theatre; the pressing relationship between art and society’s fraught political landscape; and the impact of the pandemic. With style and wry wit, Findlay demystifies how art is bought and sold while also constantly looking beyond sales figures to emphasize the primacy of art’s essential, noncommercial worth. Coloring his account with wise advice, insider anecdotes involving scoundrels and scams, stories of celebrity collectors, and remarkable discoveries, Findlay has distilled a lifetime’s experience in this indispensable guide, now updated for today’s sophisticated and discerning audience.

Talking Prices written by Olav Velthuis and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-08-19 with Social Science categories.

How do dealers price contemporary art in a world where objective criteria seem absent? Talking Prices is the first book to examine this question from a sociological perspective. On the basis of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data, including interviews with art dealers in New York and Amsterdam, Olav Velthuis shows how contemporary art galleries juggle the contradictory logics of art and economics. In doing so, they rely on a highly ritualized business repertoire. For instance, a sharp distinction between a gallery's museumlike front space and its businesslike back space safeguards the separation of art from commerce. Velthuis shows that prices, far from being abstract numbers, convey rich meanings to trading partners that extend well beyond the works of art. A high price may indicate not only the quality of a work but also the identity of collectors who bought it before the artist's reputation was established. Such meanings are far from unequivocal. For some, a high price may be a symbol of status; for others, it is a symbol of fraud. Whereas sociological thought has long viewed prices as reducing qualities to quantities, this pathbreaking and engagingly written book reveals the rich world behind these numerical values. Art dealers distinguish different types of prices and attach moral significance to them. Thus the price mechanism constitutes a symbolic system akin to language.

The Value Industry written by Daniel Barnes and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-16 with categories.

Have you ever wondered how a work of art could be worth millions? Has the world gone mad when Damien Hirst sells a dead shark for $12 million or a Picasso painting goes for £20 million? Some people think that art has nothing to do with money, that true art does not have a price tag, but it is really difficult to believe this in a world where the contemporary art market is worth $62 billion a year. The problem, says philosopher Daniel Barnes, is that nowadays it is more difficult than ever to tell the difference between good art and expensive art. In The Value Industry, Barnes explores the relationship between art and money. He argues that art is valuable as both culture and economics, but these are radically different things and the art market constantly attempts to blur the boundaries. Through a heady mixture of art market news, art criticism and philosophy, Barnes demonstrates that, despite all the money and headlines, art will always survive the ravages of capitalism because it is worth so much more than money. High auction prices, billionaire collectors, celebrity endorsements and artists' publicity stunts only serve to create the myth that the value of art is monetary, but the true value lies in the way that art enriches human existence.
