Looking Back For Jehoiachin written by James R. Critchlow and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-15 with Religion categories.

Looking Back for Jehoiachin examines the life and legacy of the last living Davidic king during the Babylonian captivity. It investigates the names Yehoyachin, Yeconiah, and Coniahu in the Hebrew Bible, Yechonias in the Septuagint, Intertestamental literature, and the New Testament. It also surveys those extrabiblical inscriptions that contribute to a thorough account of this king. The ninety- to one-hundred-day "evil" tenure of Jehoiachin and his exile to Babylon should have finalized the evaluation of his reign, but the revision of his legacy into a thoroughgoing hagiography in Josephus, the rabbinic writings, and the New Testament is notable. Jehoiachin's is the linking name between Abraham, David, and Jesus Christ in the genealogy list of Matthew 1. Jehoiachin's captivity provides a fascinating study on the longevity of the promises of the Old Testament for a future, eternal King of Judah and Israel.

The time of the Babylonian capitivity (c.587-539 BCE) is of seminal importance for the formation of the Hebrew Bible as well as for the religious development of Judaism. Previous studies of this era have usually privileged the perspective of the community of captives (the Golah), and the period is known as the `Exilic Age'. Jill Middlemas challenges this consensus, arguing that the Golah community represents only one viewpoint, and that the experiences and contributions of the majority of the Judaean population, those who remained in Judah, need to be more fully appreciated.

Culture Entertainment And The Bible written by George Aichele and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-01-01 with Religion categories.

This topical volume deals with the adoption of biblical language and narrative and the presentation of 'biblical' images and themes in popular literature, art and mass media. The chapters, all written by experts in cultural studies of the Bible, explore how ideologies are produced, in various ways, when biblical texts are brought into play with each other, with other texts, and with the inevitable and continual demands for cultural and historical "translation"-or "recycling"-of the scriptures. The volume contains some theoretical reflections, but focuses on specific examples of cultural translation, and is directed primarily at advanced (graduate) students and scholars in biblical studies, popular studies, media studies, literature, and the arts, although some articles will also be of value and interest to introductory students and the general public. The contributors to this volume are Fiona Black, Susan Lochrie Graham, Chris Heard, Helen Leneman, Phyllis Silverman Kramer, Tina Pippin, Caroline Vader Stichele, Lori Rowlett, Erin Runions, Jan William Tarlin and Richard Walsh.

In this commentary on Haggai and Malachi, Mignon Jacobs offers clear and insightful interpretation of the text while highlighting themes that are especially relevant to contemporary concerns, such as honoring or dishonoring God, the responsibilities of leaders, questioning God, and hearing the prophetic word in challenging times. Engaging with the latest scholarship, Jacobs provides a thorough introduction to both prophets in which she addresses questions of authorship, date, purpose, structure, and theology, followed by a new translation of the biblical text and a verse-by-verse commentary. With intertextual discussions about key aspects of the text and attention to competing perspectives, this commentary offers a rich new interpretation of Haggai and Malachi.

Voices Of Marginality written by Gregory Lee Cuéllar and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Bibles categories.

Voices of Marginality is theoretically grounded in the theology of the diaspora, which according to Fernando F. Segovia has been forged in the migratory experience of American Hispanics. This theological perspective views Judean exiles (587 B.C.E.) and contemporary Mexican migrants as part of a recurring diasporic human experience. The present analysis «reads across» from the exile and return envisioned in the poetry of Second Isaiah (40-55) to the corridos (ballads) about Mexican immigration to the United States. More specifically, the diasporic categories of exile and return in Second Isaiah inform our reading of exile and return in the Mexican immigrant corridos. Conversely, the rhetorical ability of these corridos to transmit a collective Mexican identity for immigrants in the United States provides a compelling lens for understanding the images of exile and return in Second Isaiah. Ultimately, both literary productions reflect voices of marginality.
