A naval officer, trig in his white twill, strode along the Escolta, Manila's leadingthoroughfare. There was something in his stride that suggested anger; and the settledgrimness of his lips, visible between his mustache and short beard, and the hard brightnessof his blue eyes emphasized this suggestion. He was angry, but it was a cold anger, a kind ofclear-minded fury which often makes calculation terrible. He had been carrying this angerin his heart for six bitter years. It was something like glacial ice; it moved always, but neverseemed to lose either hardness or configuration. To-day it had the effect of the northwind-that almost forgotten north wind of his native land-in that it winnowed all thechaff from his mind and left one clear thought. He would settle the matter once and for alltime. The face and form of an angel, and the heart of a Messalina! He had known all along that some day she would turn up in Manila. It was impossible forthem to resist the temptation to view their handiwork. Tigers, they always return to thekill. But he had her now, had her in the hollow of his hand. All the fear of her was gone. Thisafternoon he would teach her what the word meant. Civilians were lucky. These sordidthings could pop up into their lives, even get into the papers, and shortly be forgotten. Butin the navy it was the knell of advancement. It never mattered if the wrong was wholly onthe other side; the result was the same. But he had her, thank God! The world would neverknow what had turned Bob Hallowell into a misanthrope. The tentacles of the octopus hadbeen lopped off, as by a miracle. He was a free man.Never would he forget the shame and misery, the horror of that night in the Grand Hotel inYokohama. The brazenness of that confession-on the first night of his honeymoon! He wasfree, yes, but he would never be able to blot out that infernal night. Well, he had her. Sheshould leave Manila on the first ship that left port; it did not matter whether it went northor east. If she proved obdurate, he would have her arrested. He would fight her tooth andnail. The world had changed since that night. The old order had gone to smash sinceAugust, 1914. Traditions had been badly mauled by necessities. Such a scandal, in which hehad been merely the dupe, would scarcely leave a ripple in passing.

Taking Xiaoyangjuan Hutong in Beijing during the Anti-Japanese War as the specific background, the novel focuses on Qi Family and is supplemented with Qian Family, Guan Family and other residents in the Hutong to depict the images of many ordinary people from all walks of life through the complicated conflicts and reflect the perplexed and contented social mentality of Beijing citizens in the eight-year Anti-Japanese War through their humiliating and miserable experience. The novel represents their slow, painful and difficult awakening progress when the country was ruined and the people were starving. Through the growth, emotion and life history of these small potatoes, it epically shows the 'grand themes': the cruelty of war, the destruction of war on human civilization and life, the ups and downs of national destiny and the national spirit.

This book focuses on the phenomenon of sediment erosion and resuspension in the Yellow River delta, China, which is a vital issue involved in understanding the sediment transport processes in estuarine and coastal environments, and how these contribute to the nature and distribution of geohazards in the subaqueous Yellow River delta and Bohai Sea. The most important sections of this book will be the detailed physical mechanisms and theoretical models of sediment erosion and resuspension problem fully considering the wave-induced seabed dynamic response to waves, which are particularly useful for postgraduate students and junior researchers entering the discipline of estuary and coastal sedimentation, marine geotechnical engineering, estuary and coastal engineering, harbor and waterway engineering and coastal environmental protection. This book can also serve as a textbook for advanced graduate students of Marine Engineering Geology and Estuarine Sediment Dynamics.

Typhoons with unusual tracks are difficult to forecast with respect to whether, when, and where typhoon turning occurs based on traditional synoptic charts and numerical weather forecast model products. This typhoon turning atlas provides an additional tool to deal with the typhoon turning question by using a physical decomposition method together with thousands of plots. In particular, this atlas provides important information of 322 historical typhoons that occurred in the past three decades and demonstrates how they were influenced respectively. Contents:Variable DecompositionTyphoons Without Obvious Turning MotionsIntensity Peaked in the South China SeaIntensity Peaked in the PhilippinesIntensity Peaked in the Taiwan AreaIntensity Peaked in the East Seas of ChinaIntensity Peaked in the Pacific Readership: Graduates, researchers, and meteorologists who are interested in typhoons and forecasting, earth science, meteorology, and complex systems. Keywords:Typhoon Turning;Atlas;Physical Decomposition;Tropical CycloneKey Features:This atlas provides typhoon tracking, covers mathematical decomposition, and provides spherical-harmonic expansionClassification of the positions from tropical disturbance to a typhoon's peak intensity as well as an explanation of the diagnostic method of typhoon motions in this atlas will be surely useful as a good reference for researchers and forecasters in the practice of typhoon prediction

World War II was over and the U.S. was still using the captured Japanese island of Okinawa as a major naval base. Hundreds of vessels dotted the numerous bays and inlets, and thousands of military personnel occupied the island. In October 1945, Typhoon Louise tore into Okinawa, slamming ships together and tossing them onto reefs and beaches. Terrible winds tore up tent cities and disintegrated corrugated tin Quonset huts. One hundred people died and 383 ships of all sizes were sunk or damaged. This book tells the full story of the typhoon historian Samuel Eliot Morison called "the most furious and lethal storm ever encountered by the United States Navy."
