Die Juristische Gesellschaft Augsburg, im Jahre 1988 mit der Zielsetzung eines Gedankenaustauschs zu rechtlichen Fragen jeglicher Art gegründet, nahm im Jahre 1989 ihren Veranstaltungsbetrieb auf. Drei Jahrzehnte später weisen mehrere hundert durchgeführte Vortragsabende, Diskussionen, Mittagsgespräche und andere Veranstaltungen die Gesellschaft mit ihren Damen und Herren Referenten, Diskutanten und Gästen als Zeitzeugin aus. Der Herausgeber ließ in zwei Seminaren der Wintersemester 2017/2018 und 2018/2019 die nachwachsende Generation sich mit Themen der zurückgelegten Zeit und ihren Akteuren auseinandersetzen. Daraus entstand der vorliegende Band als Dokumentation jüngster Rechtsgeschichte und ihrer Reflexion. Der Herausgeber hält den Lehrstuhl für Bürgerliches Recht und Zivilverfahrensrecht, Römisches Recht und Europäische Rechtsgeschichte der Universität Augsburg inne und ist Vorsitzender der Juristischen Gesellschaft Augsburg.

Arne Grøn’s reading of Søren Kierkegaard’s authorship revolves around existential challenges of human identity. The 35 essays that constitute this book are written over three decades and are characterized by combining careful attention to the augmentative detail of Kierkegaard’s text with a constant focus on issues in contemporary philosophy. Contrary to many approaches to Kierkegaard’s authorship, Grøn does not read Kierkegaard in opposition to Hegel. The work of the Danish thinker is read as a critical development of Hegelian phenomenology with particular attention to existential aspects of human experience. Anxiety and despair are the primary existential phenomena that Kierkegaard examines throughout his authorship, and Grøn uses these negative phenomena to argue for the basically ethical aim of Kierkegaard’s work. In Grøn’s reading, Kierkegaard conceives human selfhood not merely as relational, but also a process of becoming the self that one is through the otherness of self-experience, that is, the body, the world, other people, and God. This book should be of interest to philosophers, theologians, literary studies scholars, and anyone with an interest not only in Kierkegaard, but also in human identity.

This study deals with the representation of Christ's Healing Miracles in early Christian sepulchral art from Provence and Northern Italy. It sees the imagery through the contemporary exegetical writings and tries thus to uncover new strata of symbolic significance in early Christian art. The aim of the work is to reveal the complex theological concepts reflected in the relief decoration of a small number of late fourth-century sarcophagi and to cast thus light upon the spiritual climate of the sphere the persons who commissioned them were part of. It also links the narrative structure of representations of medical treatment and miracle scenes in ancient art with the Christian images and establishes new formal and iconographic connexions.

In the World of the Second Sophistic, education, paideia, was a crucial factor in the discourse of power. Knowledge in the fields of medicine, history, philosophy, and poetry joined with rhetorical brilliance and a presentable manner became the outward appearance of the elite of the Eastern Roman Empire. This outward appearance guaranteed a high social status as well as political and economical power for the individual and major advantages for their hometowns in interpolis competition. Since paideia was related particularly to Classical Greek antiquity, it was, at the same time, fundamental to the new self-confidence of the Greek East. This book presents, for the first time, studies from a broad range of disciplines on various fields of life and on different media, in which this ideology became manifest. These contributions show that the Sophists and their texts were only the most prominent exponents of a system of thoughts and values structuring the life of the elite in general.
