English summary: Enno Edzard Popkes analyzes the relationship between the motifs of the semantics of love and the dualistic motifs in the Johannine writings, which inspired eminently contrasting interpretations. He shows that it is inappropriate to ascribe a particularistic tendency to the Johannine writings. The song of songs of the love of God (1 John 4:7-5:4) and the dramaturgic Christology of the love of God in the Gospel of John are culmination points in the formation of early Christian theology. Without giving an analogy, they reflect and formulate why the life and death of Jesus can be understood as an event of God's love. The direction of this concept towards universal salvation is not relativized by the dualistic motifs of the Gospel of John, but emphasized. Der Autor erstellt eine ausfuhrliche Analyse aller durch dualistische und liebessemantische Motive gepragten Texte der johanneischen Schriften und stutzt das erhobene Verstandnis durch sorgfaltige religionsgeschichtliche Vergleiche ab. So zeigt sich die Theologie der Liebe Gottes im ersten Johannesbrief und die narrativ ausgestaltete dramaturgische Christologie der Liebe Gottes im Johannesevangelium, durch die deutlich wird, inwiefern das Leben und der Tod Jesu in osterlicher Perspektive als ein Geschehen der Liebe Gottes verstanden werden konnen.

Doch schon Aristoteles zeigt uns: Das Recht braucht die Liebe zu seinem Bestand, und dort, wo Recht den Einzelfall nicht oder nicht hinreichend erfasst, tritt die Liebe – als Billigkeit, Epieikie – ergänzend zur Seite. Als konstitutiv für das Recht gilt seit Fichte, was Pannenberg in der Liebe entdeckt: die wechselseitige Anerkennung. Hier knüpft auch Wolfgang Huber an, nur differenzierter: Anerkennung ist Teil der Liebe, doch Liebe ist weit mehr als nur Anerkennung. Die materiale Ergänzung des formalen Begriffs "Anerkennung" gelingt Plathow durch Einbeziehung Max Schelers, der Liebe als intuitive Erfassung von "Werten" versteht. Werte aber begründen das Recht. But already Aristotle taught: law needs love for its endurance, and when it cannot cope with the single case, love stands by additionally – as epikie, equity. What since Fichte is considered constitutive for law, Pannenberg discovers also in love: mutual recognition. Here Wolfgang Huber ties in – more differentiated: recognition is part of love, but love is far more than just recognition. With regard to the material complementation to this formal concept, Plathow refers to Max Scheler, who sees love as an organ of knowledge, more precisely: as an organ of intuitive knowledge of "values". And values are the basis of law. Thus, the concrete synthesis of love and law is to be found in the concept of value.

Glaube und Theologie stehen seit den Anfängen des Christentums in produktiver Spannung zueinander, die die Reformation mit ihrem Prinzip des sola fide einerseits und mit ihrer Institutionalisierung einer schriftzentrierten akademischen Theologie andererseits in besonderer Weise aktualisiert hat. Dadurch entwickelte sich in den neu entstandenen Evangelisch-theologischen Fakultäten eine "wissenschaftliche Theologie" auf höchstem Niveau, die weltweit rezipiert wurde. Diese Theologie sieht sich allerdings in jüngster Zeit kritischen Anfragen ausgesetzt. Säkularisierungsprozesse führen zu einem massiven religiösen Bildungsverlust und damit zu einer Trivialisierung von Theologie. Zeitgleich breiten sich weltweit christliche Gruppen aus, die auf eine akademische theologische Ausbildung keinen Wert legen. In Anbetracht dieser Situation entsteht die Frage, inwiefern die Theologie reformatorischer Tradition auch in Zukunft religionsproduktiv sein und eine für die Kirchen grundlegende Arbeit leisten kann. Um diese Frage zu diskutieren, trafen sich auf Einladung des Evangelisch-Theologischen Fakultätentages, der Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft für Theologie und der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland im Oktober 2017 Theologinnen und Theologen unterschiedlicher christlicher Konfessionen in Wittenberg zu einer internationalen Konferenz. Deren wegweisende Beiträge sind in diesem Band veröffentlicht. Since the beginnings of Christianity, there has been a fundamental tension between faith and theology. The Reformation, with its principle of sola fide on the one hand and its institutionalisation of a scripture-based academic theology on the other hand, drew particular attention to the tension and suggested new answers to that problem. That effort contributed to a fundamental transformation of academic theology within the faculties of Protestant Theology which emerged as a result of the movement. In the past decades, however, academic theology has come under considerable pressure. [In much of Europe and North America,] The process of secularization has led to a massive decline in religious education and – partially as a reaction to this – to a trivialization of academic theology. At the same time, one can observe a global proliferation of evangelical and Pentecostal groups. These groups sometimes display a certain indifference towards academic theological training, or even reject it altogether. In view of this development the question arises to what extent the relationship between faith and theology as defined in the wake of the Reformation will in future continue to be religiously productive and may thus serve the churches and their congregations.

This collection of articles presents the main contributions to the third LEST (Louvain Encounters in Systematic Theology) conference, held at the K.U.Leuven's Faculty of Theology, November 2001. Its theme, Theology and Conversation: Towards a Relational Theology, continues the explorations in contemporary theology as set out in the 1997 LEST I conference on The Myriad Christ (BETL 152) and in the 1999 LEST II conference on Sacramental Presence in Postmodern Context (BETL 160). In LEST III also, the plurality and diversity of theological approaches play a major role and the question is raised whether the contemporary theological endeavour in a global world contains in itself the tools to respectfully and constructively approach this diversity. The ideas of relation and conversation, as found in the theologies of the Trinity and of creation, as presupposed in ecclesial praxis, and as articulated in reflections that take their bearings from spiritual experience, provide a powerful means for renewed theological reflection capable of confronting plurality and diversity.
