Die Institution der Sklaverei ist älter als das Christentum. Die Forschung hat immer wieder auf den humanisierenden Einfluss der christlichen Erlösungsreligion aufmerksam gemacht, in der auch Sklaven als Menschen in den Blick genommen wurden. Doch auch unter christlichen Vorzeichen existierte Sklaverei weiter und gehörte noch bis ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein zur Realität christlicher (und muslimischer) Gesellschaften im Mittelmeerraum. Wie ließ sich diese Praxis mit dem Christentum vereinbaren, das jeden Menschen als Ebenbild Gottes versteht? Die acht Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes sind aus einem von der DFG geförderten gleichnamigen Forschungsprojekt hervorgegangen. Sie widmen sich dieser Frage erstmals in einem theologiegeschichtlichen Zugriff. So werden Humanisierungstendenzen und ihre Grenzen bei christlichen Autoren vom 2. bis zum 17. Jahrhundert (u.a. Tatian, Basilius von Caesarea, Johannes Chrysostomus, Thomas von Aquin, Martin Luther, Cornelius a Lapide) und im Mönchtum herausgearbeitet. Dabei lassen sich neue Einsichten in Legitimations- und Bewältigungsstrategien sowie Rezeptionsprozesse gewinnen. The institution of slavery pre-dates Christianity. Scholarship has often drawn attention to the humanising influence of the Christian religion of salvation, which views slaves too as human. But slavery continued to exist in Christian contexts and, until the 19th century, formed part of the reality of Christian (and Muslim) societies in the Mediterranean region. How could this practice be reconciled with Christianity, which sees all people as made in God’s image? The eight contributions to this volume have their origins in a DFG-sponsored project of the same name. For the first time they approach this question from the perspective of the history of theology, examining humanising tendencies and their limits in the work of Christian authors from the 2nd to the 17th century (including Tatian, Basil of Caesarea, John Chrysostom, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther and Cornelius a Lapide) and in monasticism. This approach offers new insights into strategies of legitimisation and coping, and into processes of reception.

Der vorliegende Band untersucht am Beispiel der Jesuiten, die zwischen 1550 und 1650 an der römischen Jesuitenuniversität (Collegio Romano) lehrten, wie katholische Theologen Sklaverei thematisierten und deuteten. Dabei beschränkt sich die theologiegeschichtliche Untersuchung nicht auf die Rechtfertigung der Sklaverei in der Naturrechtsdebatte, sondern wird erstmals auf die verschiedenen (damals vorhandenen) theologischen Fächer ausgeweitet: Bibelexegese, Scholastische Theologie, Moraltheologie und Kasuistik. Mit einem eigenen Kapitel über Jesuitenmissionare werden zudem Erfahrungen mit Sklaverei beleuchtet. Jesuiten konnten selbst Sklaven oder Sklavenhalter sein. Auf diese Weise werden Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des christlichen Humanisierungsethos ausgelotet. Gemeinsam mit ihrer Kollegin Heike Grieser (Mainz) leitete Nicole Priesching (Paderborn) das DFG-Projekt „Theologie und Sklaverei von der Antike bis zur Frühen Neuzeit“ (2012-2015), aus dem zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen hervorgegangen sind. Der vorliegende Band präsentiert die Ergebnisse des Teilprojektes „Frühe Neuzeit“. Based on the example of the Jesuits who taught at Rome’s Jesuit University (Collegio Romano) between 1550 and 1650, this volume looks at the ways in which Catholic theologians thematised and interpreted slavery. The examination of the theological history is not restricted to the justification of slavery in the debates about natural law, but for the first time is expanded to take account of the various (contemporary) theological disciplines: biblical exegesis, scholastic theology, moral theology and casuistry. A chapter devoted to the Jesuit missions sheds light on actual encounters with slavery. Jesuits themselves could be slaves or slave-owners. Thus the possibilities and boundaries of the Christian ethics of humanisation are explored.

In der damaligen Situation ein nicht wegzudenkender Bestandteil des Lebens, ist es für uns heute eine menschenunwürdige Art zu leben und eine Institution, die wir verachten. Dennoch oder gerade deshalb ist es jedoch wichtig die Sklaverei nicht pauschal zu betrachten, sondern sie im historischen Rahmen und mit ihren Besonderheiten, Gründen und Unterschieden genauer zu untersuchen. Im Folgenden wird einerseits versucht, die Institution der antiken Sklaverei näher in ihrem grundsätzlichen Charakter zu bestimmen, aber auch ihren Facettenreichtum und die Unterschiede in der Welt der Sklaven darzustellen. Im Anschluss wird näher darauf eingegangen, welche Meinungen seitens der spätantiken Kirche zur Sklaverei ausgesprochen wurden und aus welcher Sichtweise die Theologie das Problem von Sklaverei und Freiheit betrachtet hat. Hat die Kirche die Sklaverei beeinflusst und wenn in welcher Weise. Diesen Fragen kann nicht in aller Detailliertheit und Ausführlichkeit nachgegangen werden, wie es nötig wäre um dieses Thema hinreichend zu bearbeiten. Dennoch hoffe ich, dass ein guter Weg gefunden wurde, um einen Einblick in die Problematik dieser Zeit zu geben.

Wie passen das christliche Gebot „Liebe deinen Nächsten wie dich selbst“ und die gewaltsame Versklavung und Ausbeutung von Menschen zusammen? Dieser Frage geht die Teilbiographie über Vinzenz von Paul (1581–1660) mit Blick auf die Praxis der Sklaverei im Mittelmeerraum nach. Der von der katholischen Kirche als Patron aller karitativen Werke verehrte Ordensgründer kannte aus eigener Anschauung die von Gewalt und Entbehrung geprägten Lebenswelten der Gefangenen: in Marseille und Toulon sorgte er sich als königlicher Galeerenseelsorger um Sträflinge und muslimische Sklaven und betreute in Tunis und Algier christliche Sklaven. Die Studie zeigt erstmalig, welche karitativen Antworten Vinzenz von Paul im Kontext seiner Seelsorge auf die Not der Gefangenen in Frankreich und Nordafrika gab und wie er Galeerenstrafe, Zwangsarbeit und Sklaverei spirituell deutete. Vinzenz von Pauls theologische Überzeugungen und sein pastorales Handeln lassen den Zusammenhang von Religion und Gewalt in einem neuen Licht erscheinen und stellen die klassische Humanisierungsthese, wonach das Christentum sukzessive auf die Abschaffung von Sklaverei hingewirkt habe, grundlegend in Frage. Daniel Steinke leitet das Ideenmanagement am Universitätsklinikum Münster und befasst sich als Personalentwickler insbesondere mit den Themen Führungskultur und Unternehmensentwicklung. Der Autor und Mitbegründer des Wissenschaftsforums Ideenmanagement ist seit 2005 an verschiedenen Hochschulen in Forschung und Lehre tätig (WWU Münster, Exzellenzcluster „Religion und Politik“, Universität Paderborn) und verantwortete die Umstrukturierung und Neuausrichtung einer staatlich anerkannten Bildungseinrichtung. This partial biography of Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) examines this question with a view to the practice of slavery in the Mediterranean region. The founder of charitable religious orders, honoured by the Catholic Church as the patron of all works of charity, has first-hand knowledge of the violence and deprivation that characterised the lives of prisoners: as a royal chaplain on the galleys in Marseilles and Toulon he cared for prisoners and Muslim slaves, and in Tunis and Algiers he ministered to Christian slaves. This study describes for the first time the charitable answers that Vincent de Paul offered to the needs of prisoners in France and North Africa in the context of his ministry, and how he interpreted galley slavery, forced labour and slavery spiritually. Vincent de Paul’s theological convictions and his pastoral activity shed new light on the connection between religion and violence and call into question the classical theory of humanisation according to which Christianity worked gradually towards the abolition of slavery.

Der Loskauf von Sklaven und Gefangenen hat den Mittelmeerraum von der Antike bis in die Frühe Neuzeit geprägt. Er stellt, eng verbunden mit der Geschichte der Sklaverei, nicht nur verschiedene Facetten des Bemühens um deren Beseitigung dar, sondern ist darüber hinaus auch selbst ein entscheidender Bestandteil verschiedener Konflikt- und Beziehungsgeschichten. Die vierzehn Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes, die auf eine von der DFG geförderte internationale Tagung im September 2013 in Paderborn zurückgehen, betrachten die Thematik erstmalig unter der vorrangigen Fragestellung nach der Bedeutung von Religion. Sie untersuchen epochenübergreifend und aus jüdischer, christlicher und muslimischer Sicht Praxis und Begründungen des Loskaufs aus den Händen der jeweils Andersgläubigen. Dadurch werden zum einen die in den drei abrahamitischen Religionen jeweils geführten theologiegeschichtlichen Diskurse analysiert und nach Möglichkeit miteinander in Beziehung gesetzt. Zum anderen gelingt es, die bislang dominierende wirtschafts- und sozialgeschichtliche Betrachtungsweise des Loskaufs um die religionsgeschichtliche Perspektive zu ergänzen und damit ein neues, vielversprechendes Forschungsfeld zu präsentieren. Slave redemption and prisoner redemption characterised the Mediterranean region from antiquity to the early modern age. Closely connected with the history of slavery, these phenomena not only represent different facets of the efforts to end slavery but are also in themselves a decisive part of various histories of conflict and relationships. The fourteen essays in this volume, originally presented at an international conference in Paderborn sponsored by the DFG in September 2013, examine the theme for the first time in terms of the fundamental question of the significance of religion. Taking a broad chronological sweep they examine, from Jewish, Christian and Muslim perspectives, the practice and justification of redeeming slaves from the hands of those of other faiths. Thus the theological and historical discourses in each of the three Abrahamic religions are analysed and the links between them established where possible. The approach also adds the perspective of religious history to the previously dominant social and economic approaches to slave redemption, opening up a new and greatly promising field of research.

From the 15th century, and especially after the Union of the Churches in 1439 and the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the island of Crete was considered both by the pope and by Cardinal Bessarion as the ideal place for the spread of the new philo-Catholic reality. This is also the period during which Crete provided the West with scholars, scribes and texts, giving to the Greek-knowledge aspect of the Italian humanism a substantial boost. Through an interdisciplinary approach involving archival documents in Latin and manuscript evidences in Greek, this study aims to portray the Uniate Cretan scribe and theologian John Plousiadenos (1423?-1500) and to explore the political, religious and intellectual context within which he lived and acted. The appendix of this book includes, among other materials, the editio princeps of two Greek texts (the Prayer to the Holy Spirit and the Pattern for the Catholic confession) composed by John Plousiadenos.
