[Theological Introduction to the Bible] The biblical texts are the blood coursing in the veins of theology. Studying theology means studying the Bible thoroughly. This introduction provides the basic information for the preliminary exams in Germany in a didactic skilful way. But as a theological textbook this introduction goes further: It connects the basic information with their theological significance. This helps learning. But provides also a good starting point for advanced theological studies. Besides some historical and exegetical information, the perspective of the book is one of the history of the impact of Biblical texts: How the Old Testament is seen in the New and in Jewish and Christian tradition — and gives even some glimpses into the Quranic. Particular attention is paid to the reception in art, literature, music and movies. The aim is at understanding the Bible as the fundamental textbook of our western culture.

This book originated in the Donatio Universitatis Carolinae award and research support that Professor Petr Pokorný received in 2017. It was envisioned, designed, and originally conducted as a project exploring the biblical roots of Christian culture. Experts in various theological and philosophical disciplines, both from the Czech Republic and abroad, were to probe this topic from their particular perspectives. The hoped-for output was to be a coherent collective study of the proposed topic. However, due to the unexpected passing away of Prof. Pokorný in early 2020, the project could not be executed according to the original plan. Rather than a collective monograph, therefore, the present book is a collection of essays that investigate various aspects of the Bible and Christianity in their relation to culture as a broad human phenomenon. The book is divided into two sections. While the first section focuses on particular issues in the Bible, the second addresses historical, philosophical, and cultural developments. As Petr Pokorný was actively and importantly involved in the initial stages of the project, two essays are written by him personally. The whole book, then, is dedicated in his honor.

This book forms a contribution to the vexing question of the origin and growth of the Targum to the Prophets. It provides an in-depth analysis of the Targum of Judges on the basis of new materials (unpublished manuscripts), a new tool (bilingual concordance) and a new method (analysis of consistency). A critical review of previous research concerning the Targum's origin and growth is followed by an analysis and collations of many Western manuscripts, a systematic comparison of the Targum with the ancient translations, a study of its exegetical traditions and a thorough examination of its consistency. On this basis it is suggested that the Targum assumed its basic form in the second century CE, due to the emergency of the rabbinic tradition, but outside the context of the synagogue.

Dieses Buch, der Katalog der Bibliothek der Mennonitengemeinde zu Hamburg und Altona, ist der vorläufige Endpunkt einer langen Entwicklung. Die Pastoren der jungen Mennonitengemeinde in der kleinen Stadt Altona haben damals (seit 1601) selbstverständlich Bücher besessen und fleißig benutzt. Sie haben auch Bücher weiter gesammelt und ihre Bibliotheken ihren nachfolgenden Pastorenkollegen hinterlassen. Durch die Jahrhunderte hindurch kam eine stattliche Zahl von Büchern zusammen, die aber auch regelmäßig durch Feuer, Feuchte, Vernachlässigung, Krieg und sogar Verkauf vermindert wurde. Bis Anfang der 1970er Jahre wurde der Bestand auf dem Dachboden der Gemeinde gelagert. Die Erinnerungen von Elke Foth (in diesem Band zu finden) stellen dar, wie ihr Mann, Pastor Peter J. Foth, die Bücher vom Dachboden geholt und auf Regalen im jetzigen Bibliotheksraum aufgestellt hat. In den 1990er Jahren wurde von Kirchenrat dem Verfasser dieses Vorwortes die Aufgabe übertragen, die Bücher zu sortieren, zu ordnen und zu katalogisieren. Dieser Katalog stellt jetzt einen Großteil des jetzigen Bestands der Bibliothek dar. Jeder Bibliothekskatalog will informieren. Interessierte wollen wissen welche Bücher von welchen Autoren in der Bibliothek zu finden sind, und welche Ausgaben dieser Bücher auf den Regalen stehen. Viele wollen auch bibliographische Details in Erfahrung bringen. Wie jeder Bibliothekskatalog auch, will unser Katalog in diesen Punkten so vollständig wie möglich informieren. Zu diesem Zweck ist dieser Katalog in zwei Teile geteilt. Zuerst kommt eine alphabetisch nach den Autorennamen sortierte Liste der Bücher. Dieser Teil des Katalogs wird logischerweise von Interessierten konsultiert, die bestimmte Werke von bestimmten Verfassern suchen. Ein weiterer Teil des Katalogs listet die Bücher nach den Signaturen der einzelnen Werke. Diese Liste ergibt dann eine Sortierung der Titel nach den Sachgebieten des Bestands. Wer dieser Liste vom Anfang bis zum Ende folgt, erlebt wie die Bücher nach der Reihenfolge des Signatursystems auf den Regalen des Bibliotheksraumes stehen. Selbstverständlich gehören auch eine Aufstellung des verwendeten Signatursystems und eine Erklärung der Kürzel dazu. Der vorliegende Katalog wird klarmachen, daß die Bibliothek der Gemeinde eben eine Bibliothek einer Kirchengemeinde ist. Sie umfasst Bücher, die die Interessen einer Kirchengemeinde abdecken...
