Working at the borderlands of philosophy and theology, Jeffrey Privette thinks theologically about epistemology, both within the context of the realism versus antirealism debate, and with sustained reference to the incarnation. His study is divided into three parts: the first and second deal with the role of language and interpretation in experience generally, as well as with some of the curious philosophical problems foreshadowed by the predicament of language. Romantik und Realismus werden in der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung vorwiegend als Gegensätze beschrieben. Ihre Rekonstruktion als dichotome Epochen verstellt aber den Blick auf die Kontinuitäten zwischen den beiden großen Literaturbewegungen des 19. Jahrhunderts, auf ihre gemeinsamen Problemfelder und Strategien zur Problembewältigung. Denn weshalb beziehen sich Texte in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts permanent auf eine Literatur, die sie als ›Romantik‹ kennzeichnen und aus der Welt schaffen wollen? Weshalb bearbeiten Texte, die als ›realistische‹ positioniert werden, über einen Zeitraum von immerhin gut 50 Jahren Konzepte und Themenkomplexe, die erkennbar ihren Anfang in der von ihnen abgelehnten und als obsolet konzipierten Romantik nehmen? Weshalb lassen sie fortwährend romantische Figuren auftreten oder romantische Motive handlungsleitend ein? Ganz offenbar handelt es sich beim Romantischen, das der Realismus bestreitet, um einen unerledigten Problemkomplex. Ausgehend vondiesen Beobachtungen stellt sich das Verhältnis von romantischer und realistischer Literatur weniger als epochale Dichotomie, sondern vielmehr als konstitutives Wechselverhältnis dar – als komplementäre Konstellation vor einem gemeinsamen Problemhorizont. Romantische und realistische Literatur lassen sich als alternative und gleichwohl parallele Strategien im Umgang mit historischen Transformationsprozessen auffassen, die ungeachtet ihrer markierten Konkurrenz kaum jemals ungemischt zur Anwendung kommen. Romantische und realistische Tendenzen treten in wechselseitiger Abhängigkeit auf. Dabei geht es sowohl den programmatisch romantisierenden als auch den programmatisch realistischen Texten um nicht weniger als die Gestaltung gesellschaftlicher Realität. Auf der Grundlage einer anderen Begründungsgeschichte der deutschsprachigen Literatur im 19. Jahrhundert lassen sich Beschreibungsmodelle für kulturelle Identifikations- und Transformationsprozesse gewinnen. Die untersuchten literarischen Texte formulieren ebenso Konzepte für den Umgang mit kulturellem Wandel wie sie Konstellationen kulturellen Wandels als Positionskämpfe zwischen romantischen und realistischen Akteuren konfigurieren.

In The Doctrine of God Dolf te Velde examines the interaction of method and content in three historically important accounts of the doctrine of God. Does the method of a systematic theology affect the belief content expressed by it? Can substantial insights be detected that have a regulative function for the method of a doctrine of God? This two-way connection of method and content is investigated in three phases of Reformed theology. The first seeks to discover inner dynamics of Reformed scholastic theology. The second part treats Karl Barth’s doctrine of God as a contrast model for scholasticism, understood in the framework of Barth’s theological method. The third part offers a first published comprehensive description and analysis of the so-called Utrecht School. The closing chapter draws some lines for developing a Reformed doctrine of God in the 21st century.

This monograph studies the theological motivations behind certain Jewish apocalypses by focusing on the mighty acts of God recounted in these writings. In particular, the work examines the various depictions of God’s acts and attributes as a means for learning about the individuals and groups responsible for the transmission of these apocalypses. Three prominent motifs, among others, receive attention here: theophanies (e.g., I Enoch 1:3–9; 25:3; 77:1; Daniel 4:10, 20; 7:9–10, 13–14), portrayals of the resurrection (e.g., I Enoch 102 – 104; Daniel 12:1–3), and interpretations of the (Babylonian) Exile in connection with the “new creation” (e.g., Qumran, Jubilees, Pseudo-Philo). Apocalypticism provides a framework for various theologies. Generally speaking, God is shown as the most prominent figure in these dramas of eschatological events. The authors of these writings typically held that their only deliverance could arise from the imminent arrival of an otherworldly eon ushered in by the power of God.
