There has been a recent revival of interest in the doctrine of divine simplicity in systematic and philosophical theology, following decades of intense reflection on the tri-personhood of the Christian God. While recent studies have produced a greater appreciation of patristic and scholastic theologies, they have not yet engaged in dialogue with proponents of the trinitarian revival that emerged in the latter half of the twentieth century in anything other than polemical terms. This book offers a theological defense of the doctrine of divine simplicity through careful reading of both exemplary historical theologians and Robert W. Jenson, an important American contributor to the trinitarian revival. After tracing continuities and discontinuities amongst select historical theologians, the book approaches Jenson with a multivalent account of divine simplicity. The result is a more nuanced interpretation of Jenson’s theology, an account of divine simplicity that responds to perceived problems, and new constructive proposals for divine simplicity in trinitarian theology.

Ultimately, this work offers a constructive and critical engagement with pentecostal spirituality, and with pentecostal theology via the larger ecumenical, creedal, and dogmatic metaphysical tradition. Guarino argues in this book that the doctrinal form of the Christian faith, in its essential characteristics, calls for certain theoretical exigencies. This is to say that the proportion and beauty of the form is not served or illuminated by simply any presuppositions. Rather, a determinate understanding of first philosophy, of the nature of truth, of hermeneutical theory, of the predication of language and mutual correlation is required if Christian faith and doctrine are to maintain a recognizable and suitably mediative form. Failing to adduce specific principles will lead either to a simple assertion of Christian truth, in which case the form of Christianity becomes less intelligible and attractive-or one will substitute a radically changed form, which is itself inappropriate for displaying the fundamental revelatory narrative of faith. The house of Christian faith possesses a certain proportion of structure; the form will sag badly if one removes an undergirding item, or if one beam is replaced with another of variable shape or size. The form's beauty will either be obscured, no longer clearly visible, or the form will become something quite different, no longer architectonically related to what was originally the case. The intention of this book is to discuss those doctrinal characteristics considered fundamental to the Christian faith, as protective of its revelatory form and, concomitantly, to examine the theoretical principles required if such form is to remain both intelligible and beautiful.

Through exploring those few attempts, it becomes evident that pentecostals aim to participate in the metaphysical discipline in the same way they theologize-that is, informed by the norms, practices, and speech acts that constitute their spirituality. Robles follows this proclivity and aim to construct a metaphysics that is at once attuned to pentecostal spirituality/theology, and deeply connected to the classical tradition of Christian metaphysics. James K.A. Smith's five elements of a pentecostal worldview provide helpful categories to accomplish this. By first sketching what pentecostal theologians have constructed within Smith's categories, what gets revealed is the tendency of said theologians to theologize from an idealized pentecostal spirituality that can no longer be assumed to be widely practiced. Indeed, Robles discovers that current popular forms of pentecostal spirituality are obstructing our ability to: (1) faithfully worship the triune God, and thus (2) coherently understand reality in relation to him in the way classical Christian metaphysics has bequeathed to us. Robles subsequently constructs a pentecostal metaphysics-once again, utilizing Smith's categories-in conversation with the classical Christian tradition which leads to a call for (re)forming pentecostal praxis. Finally, Robles closes with a proposal for pentecostals to consider liturgical renewal so that our spirituality might work with the grain of a faithful understanding of the God-world relation"--
