Excerpt from Theology of the Hebrew Christians The faith of modern Judaism is divided from Christianity by a broad line of demarcation, and denial of Christ has become an essential article of the Hebrew creed. But it was otherwise in the apostolic age: the apostles did not abandon the worship of Jehovah in consequence of their adhesion to Christ, the union of the two creeds subsisted for a whole generation in the Primitive Church, and prevailed throughout what was then its most important section. Excerpt from The Modern Hebrew and the Hebrew Christian The first thing I can remember, and that only as a. Dream, is the death of my father, when I was not quite four years old. But I have a distinct remem brance of what occurred after that age. Regularly every morning, as soon as I was washed and dressed, my nurse used to take me to my mother, who was seated in her arm-chair, and after the usual morning kiss, I folded my hands, and my mother prayed with me in Hebrew. She would then take me in her arms, kiss me, and carry me to the table where my brother and Sisters were assembled. A piece of bread was then placed in my hand, and in a. Loud voice I pronounced the following blessing in Hebrew Blessed art Thou, O Jehovah, our God, King of the Universe, who bringest forth bread from the earth. Then all present would say, Amen. The meal concluded, I was taught in the Aramean language, to say Praised be the merciful One, the Lord and King of this food. In the evening, before I was put to bed, my mother again prayed with me, in Hebrew, concluding with the words Into Thy hands, 0 Lord, I commit my Spirit, while I sleep, even until I awake, for Thou, God, art my Protector, in whom I can trust. Excerpt from Jewish Theology: Systematically and Historically Considered It is from this standpoint, taken also by the sainted founder of the Hebrew Union College, Isaac M. Wise, that I have writ ten this book. At the same time I endeavored to be, as it behooves the historian, just and fair to Conservative Judaism, which will ever claim the reverence we owe to our cherished past, the mother that raised and nurtured us. While a work of this nature cannot lay claim to complete ness, I have attempted to cover the whole field of Jewish belief, including also such subjects as no longer form parts of the religious consciousness of the modern Jew. I felt especially called upon to elucidate the historical relations of Judaism to the Christian and Mohammedan religions and dwell on the essential points of divergence from them. If my language at times has been rather vigorous in defense of the Jewish faith, it was because I was forced to correct and refute the prevail ing view of the Christian world, of both theologians and others that Judaism is an inferior religion, clannish and exclusive, that it is, in fact, a cult of the Old Testament Law. Excerpt from Judaism and Christianity, the Differences We have no objection, however, to Professor Friedrich's definition of judeo-christian as an acknowledgment of Christianity's debt to Judaism and of the profound influ ence of the Hebrew Bible on the New Testament. We, and there is ample reason to assume that the vast ma jority of Christians will second this objection, oppose, however, the use of judeo-christian in the sense Pro fessor Morgenstern employs it, namely to express that the two religions are truly, basically one. For, in point of fact, Judaism and Christianity are lt basically one but are, as Professor Friedrich so aptly states, fundamentally opposed to each other. Professor Herford was therefore right in prognosticating that Judaism and Christianity can never blend without the surrender by the one or the other of its fundamental principles. In view of such authoritative Christian statements, it seems strange that Dr. Morgenstern blithely asserts that we may truthfully call judeo-christianity the religion of tomorrow's better world (judaism's Contribution to post-war Religion, p. A top Old Testament theologian known for his accessible and provocative writing probes what is necessary to understand and appropriate the Hebrew Bible as a fundamental resource for Christian theology and life today. This volume offers a creative example of theological interpretation, modeling a way of doing Old Testament theology that takes seriously both the nature of the biblical text as ancient text and also the questions and difficulties that arise as believers read this text in a contemporary context. Walter Moberly offers an in-depth study of key Old Testament passages, highlighting enduring existential issues in the Hebrew Bible and discussing Jewish readings alongside Christian readings. The volume is representative of the content of Israel's Scripture rather than comprehensive, yet it discusses most of the major topics of Old Testament theology. Moberly demonstrates a Christian approach to reading and appropriating the Old Testament that holds together the priorities of both scholarship and faith.

Excerpt from The Hebrew Christian Witness and Prophetic Investigator: An Anglo-Judaeo Christian Magazine; Volume for 1874 That our readers may not suppose that our description of Professor Max Miiller's discourse is unwarrantable, we proceed to furnish an analysis of it as it was published in the principal London papers. The Professor sets forth by classifying or cataloguing the religions of the world, and finds, according to his way of counting, that the number of reli gions only amounts to eight. The Semitic races have produced three the Jewish, the Christian, the Mohammedan. We would respectft intimate to the lecturer that he is at fault here in his theory of compa. Ruh've theology. The Semih'c race has produced one religion only, and that is Judaism. Christianity is Judaism fully developed and perfected.
