During last couple of years there has been an increasing recognition that problems arising in biology or related to medicine really need a multidisciplinary approach. For this reason some special branches of both applied theoretical physics and mathematics have recently emerged such as biomechanics, mechanobiology, mathematical biology, biothermodynamics. This first section of the book, General notes on biomechanics and mechanobiology, comprises from theoretical contributions to Biomechanics often providing hypothesis or rationale for a given phenomenon that experiment or clinical study cannot provide. It deals with mechanical properties of living cells and tissues, mechanobiology of fracture healing or evolution of locomotor trends in extinct terrestrial giants. The second section, Biomechanical modelling, is devoted to the rapidly growing field of biomechanical models and modelling approaches to improve our understanding about processes in human body. The last section called Locomotion and joint biomechanics is a collection of works on description and analysis of human locomotion, joint stability and acting forces.

Rapid developments have taken place in biological/biomedical measurement and imaging technologies as well as in computer analysis and information technologies. The increase in data obtained with such technologies invites the reader into a virtual world that represents realistic biological tissue or organ structures in digital form and allows for simulation and what is called “in silico medicine.” This volume is the third in a textbook series and covers both the basics of continuum mechanics of biosolids and biofluids and the theoretical core of computational methods for continuum mechanics analyses. Several biomechanics problems are provided for better understanding of computational modeling and analysis. Topics include the mechanics of solid and fluid bodies, fundamental characteristics of biosolids and biofluids, computational methods in biomechanics analysis/simulation, practical problems in orthopedic biomechanics, dental biomechanics, ophthalmic biomechanics, cardiovascular biomechanics, hemodynamics, cell mechanics, and model-, rule-, and image-based methods in computational biomechanics analysis and simulation. The book is an excellent resource for graduate school-level engineering students and young researchers in bioengineering and biomedicine.

MULTISCALE BIOMECHANICS Model biomechanical problems at multiple scales with this cutting-edge technology Multiscale modelling is the set of techniques used to solve physical problems which exist at multiple scales either in space or time. It has been shown to have significant applications in biomechanics, the study of biological systems and their structures, which exist at scales from the macroscopic to the microscopic and beyond, and which produce a myriad of overlapping problems. The next generation of biomechanical researchers therefore has need of the latest multiscale modelling techniques. Multiscale Biomechanics offers a comprehensive introduction to these techniques and their biomechanical applications. It includes both the theory of multiscale biomechanical modelling and its practice, incorporating some of the latest research and surveying a wide range of multiscale methods. The result is a thorough yet accessible resource for researchers looking to gain an edge in their biomechanical modelling. Multiscale Biomechanics readers will find: Practical biomechanical applications for a variety of multiscale methods Detailed discussion of soft and hard tissues, and more An introduction to analysis of advanced topics ranging from stenting, drug delivery systems, and artificial intelligence in biomechanics Multiscale Biomechanics is a useful reference for researchers and scientists in any of the life sciences with an interest in biomechanics, as well as for graduate students in mechanical, biomechanical, biomedical, civil, material, and aerospace engineering.

Assessment of the physical dimensions of the human body and application of this knowledge to the design of tools, equip ment, and work are certainly among the oldest arts and sciences. It would be an easy task if all anthropometric dimensions, of all people, would follow a general rule. Thus, philosophers and artists embedded their ideas about the most aesthetic proportions into ideal schemes of perfect proportions. "Golden sections" were developed in ancient India, China, Egypt, and Greece, and more recently by Leonardo DaVinci, or Albrecht Durer. However, such canons are fictive since actual human dimensions and proportions vary greatly among individuals. The different physical appearances often have been associated with mental, physiological and behavioral characteristics of the individuals. Hypocrates (about 460-377 BC) taught that there are four temperaments (actually, body fluids) represented by four body types. The psychiatrist Ernst Kretchmer (1888-1964) proposed that three typical somatotypes (pyknic, athletic, aesthenic) could reflect human character traits. Since the 1940's, W. H. Sheldon and his coworkers devised a system of three body physiques (endo-, meso-, ectomorphic). The classification was originally qualitative, and only recently has been developed to include actual measurements.

Based on the own experience of the authors and the literature, an original proposition of the device and system software based on the quotient scale was presented, where the mutual relations of parameters from several or several simultaneously working measuring devices are easily visible on a common graph in real time. The project is connected with an outline of problems of musculoskeletal system diagnostics, aiming at creating a universal, systemic parametric graph, defining in parallel-multi-parametric and quantitative manner, the patient,Äôs initial health profile as a set of parametric symmetries (or asymmetries), having specific and separate characteristics for healthy individuals in all age groups, as well as in groups with specific disease units. The directional pattern for Authors, aiming at the systemic recognition of the causative phenomena and the consequences of motion in the form of a multi-parameter graph calibrated by a common time axis is the way of electrode location, recording and parameterization of the ECG curve. This universal formula, defining parametrically the problems of evolutionary and involutionary norms, as well as most known pathologies, has become the foundation of cardiology, functioning worldwide over the language barrier.

In recent years there has been a growth in interest in studying the heart from the perspective of the physical sciences: mechanics, fluid flow, electromechanics. This volume is the result of a workshop held in July 1989 at the Institute for Nonlinear Sciences at the University of California at San Diego that brought together scientists and clinicians with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who shared an interest in the heart. The chapters were prepared by the invited speakers as didactic reviews of their subjects but also include the structure, mechanical properties, and function of the heart and the myocardium, electrical activity of the heart and myocardium, and mathematical models of heart function.
