Wilhelm Dilthey eröffnete der Biographieforschung bei aller Skepsis gegenüber ihrer Fähigkeit zu wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis geradezu einen Königsweg zu einer Königsdisziplin. The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression. Die Gliederung dieser Arbeit orientiert sich an der historischen Entwicklung der Biographie im deutschsprachigen Raum seit dem 18. Jh. Die Ausgangsfrage ist, welche theoretischen Konzepte von Autorschaft und welche Identitäts- sowie Geschichtsmodelle die Herausbildung der modernen Biographie bedingten, ihr zur Popularität verhalfen oder sie ausschlossen vom akademischen Forschen. Die Analyse von Biographien über Marieluise Fleißer (ca. ein Drittel der Arbeit) erfordert eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit für die Rolle der Kategorie "Geschlecht" in biographischen Darstellungen. Darum werden die Ausführungen zur Herausbildung der modernen Biographie verknüpft mit Überlegungen zu den für diesen Zeitraum relevanten Geschlechts- und Autorschaftskonzeptionen. Wie prägt das sich im 18. Jh. herauskristallisierende Individualitätsmodell die Darstellungsmuster von Biographien und welche spezifischen Auswirkungen hat es bis heute auf die Biographien von Autorinnen? Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Zusammenhang zwischen Autormodellen, ästhetischer Wertung von literarischen Texten und der Positionierung von Autorinnen im literarischen Kanon. In Auseinandersetzung mit der traditionellen Erfassung "weiblicher" Autorschaft wird versucht, einen Ansatz zu erarbeiten, der zum einen der kritischen Analyse von traditioneller Frauen-Biographik dienen kann, der zum anderen die literarische Produktivität von Frauen darstellbar machen lässt. Erkenntnisse aus Dekonstruktion, Diskursanalyse und den Gender Studies bilden das Fundament dieser Arbeit. Die Biographie wird hier in der Debatte um den "Tod" und die "Rückkehr des Autors" verortet und daran anknüpfend gefragt, ob mit der Wiederkehr des Autors auch die "Revitalisierung der Autorin" und die Wiederbelebung der Biographie einhergeht. Marieluise Fleißer wurde als Beispiel gewählt, weil die komplexe Beziehung zwischen Literatur und Leben in ihrem Fall verstärkt auf ein einfaches Entsprechungsverhältnis mit selbsttherapeutischer Funktion reduziert wird. An 3 Biograpien wird gezeigt, wie traditionelle Deutungsmuster das Verknüpfen von Fleißers Leben und Werk in Biographien prägen. Zusätzlich soll mit dem besonderen Fokus auf ihr Drama "Der Tiefseefisch" detailliert dargestellt werden, wie die Biographen den "Brückenschlag zwischen Lebensbeschreibung und Werkanalyse" realisierten.

This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism.
