Mit seinem ersten Hauptwerk von 1789 schafft Reinhold die Grundlagen für die Auseinandersetzung mit der Kantischen Philosophie und damit für ein Denken, das die philosophische Landschaft tiefgreifend verändern wird, nämlich für den deutschen Idealismus. Karl Leonhard Reinhold (1757-1823) trifft mit seinen populären "Briefen über die Kantische Philosophie" (1786-1787) haarscharf den Nerv der Zeit und setzt damit die kritische Philosophie Kants für ein breiteres Publikum auf die philosophische Agenda. Der Versuch einer neuen Theorie des menschlichen Vorstellungsvermögens (1789) ist sein erstes großes theoretisches Werk. Reinhold präsentiert es als einen Versuch, die kritische Philosophie auf der Grundlage des Vorstellungsvermögens allgemeiner verständlich zu machen. Zugleich ist auch bereits beabsichtigt, für die an sich richtigen Resultate der kritischen Philosophie die von Kant selbst nicht gelieferte Begründung zu finden. Daraus entwickelt sich ab 1791 Reinholds Elementarphilosophie, für die die kritische Philosophie (seiner Ansicht nach) nur noch Propädeutik ist. Reinholds Versuch besteht, neben einer langen "Vorrede", aus drei Büchern. In der "Vorrede" und im ersten Buch stellt der Autor die epochale Bedeutung der kritischen Philosophie heraus. Im zweiten Buch folgt die eigentliche Theorie des Vorstellungsvermögens, von der aus im dritten Buch Kants wichtigste Entdeckungen in der Kritik der reinen Vernunft (1781, 1787), nämlich die Unterscheidung von Sinnlichkeit, Verstand und Vernunft, neu dargestellt werden. Hierbei liefert Reinhold u.a. eine eigene und höchst originelle Ableitung der Kategorien und der Ideen. In seiner Einleitung beschreibt der Herausgeber Reinhold in seiner philosophischen Entwicklung hin zu einem eigenständigen Denker mit einer ganz eigenen philosophischen Agenda, die er allerdings auf eine sehr geschickte Weise mit dem philosophischen Anliegen Kants zu verbinden vermochte.
