Profane Culture written by Paul E Willis and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-24 with Social Science categories.

A classic of British cultural studies, Profane Culture takes the reader into the worlds of two important 1960s youth cultures—the motor-bike boys and the hippies. The motor-bike boys were working-class motorcyclists who listened to the early rock 'n' roll of the late 1950s. In contrast, the hippies were middle-class drug users with long hair and a love of progressive music. Both groups were involved in an unequal but heroic fight to produce meaning and their own cultural forms in the face of a larger society dominated by the capitalist media and commercialism. They were pioneers of cultural experimentation, the self-construction of identity, and the curating of the self, which, in different ways, have become so widespread today. In Profane Culture, Paul Willis develops an important and still very contemporary theory and methodology for understanding the constructions of lived and popular culture. His new preface discusses the ties between the cultural moment explored in the book and today.

`The essays are thematically well organized and lucidly presented. In terms of design, contents and presentation, this is undoubtedly an excellent textbook′ - Journal of Educational Planning and Administration `Education Studies: Essential Issues′ is a book similar in style to the editor′s first volume ′Introduction to Education Studies′, both books introducing a variety of broad educational issues while analyzing certain areas in greater depth. Whereas the first book dealt with wider perspectives on education (i.e. research, politics and policy, psychological theory), this book deals with more specific issues with chapters viewing education through early years and compulsory schooling to post-compulsory and higher education, through to lifelong learning. Ultimately this book is quite unique due to the collection of chapters and is a worthy addition to any university bookshelf or as a key text for mandatory education modules′ - Scott Buckler, University of Worcester, for Escalate `This book is essential reading for all those concerned about education, especially for those working within the education system′ - International Journal of Educational Management `[Education Studies] is an informed and informative introduction. Teachers as well as student teachers will find it stimulating and valuable. Topics it covers well include teacher management and teacher professionalism′ - Michael Duffy, Times Educational Supplement This key text provides an overview of current theoretical issues, areas of study and major themes that are covered in education studies programmes. Chapters include: - globalization - differentiation - early childhood - special needs - citizenship and education - lifelong learning - post-compulsory education - higher education - management and professionalism in teaching - education and economic development. Prominent contributors in each field provide students with a solid grounding in the areas they will be studying and point the way to further successful study. Virtual Inequality written by Karen Mossberger and has been published by Georgetown University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-18 with Political Science categories.

That there is a "digital divide"—which falls between those who have and can afford the latest in technological tools and those who have neither in our society—is indisputable. Virtual Inequality redefines the issue as it explores the cascades of that divide, which involve access, skill, political participation, as well as the obvious economics. Computer and Internet access are insufficient without the skill to use the technology, and economic opportunity and political participation provide primary justification for realizing that this inequality is a public problem and not simply a matter of private misfortune. Defying those who say the divide is growing smaller, this volume, based on a unique national survey that includes data from over 1800 respondents in low-income communities, shows otherwise. In addition to demonstrating why disparities persist in such areas as technological abilities, the survey also shows that the digitally disadvantaged often share many of the same beliefs as their more privileged counterparts. African-Americans, for instance, are even more positive in their attitudes toward technology than whites are in many respects, contrary to conventional wisdom. The rigorous research on which the conclusions are based is presented accessibly and in an easy-to-follow manner. Not content with analysis alone, nor the untangling of the complexities of policymaking, Virtual Inequality views the digital divide compassionately in its human dimensions and recommends a set of practical and common-sense policy strategies. Inequality, even in a virtual form this book reminds us, is unacceptable and a situation that society is compelled to address.
