This handbook is structured in two parts: it provides, on the one hand, a comprehensive (synchronic) overview of the phonetics and phonology (including prosody) of a breadth of Romance languages and focuses, on the other hand, on central topics of research in Romance segmental and suprasegmental phonology, including comparative and diachronic perspectives. Phonetics and phonology have always been a core discipline in Romance linguistics: the wide synchronic variety of languages and dialects derived from spoken Latin is extensively explored in numerous corpus and atlas projects, and for quite a few of these varieties there is also more or less ample documentation of at least some of their diachronic stages. This rich empirical database offers excellent testing grounds for different theoretical approaches and allows for substantial insights into phonological structuring as well as into (incipient, ongoing, or concluded) processes of phonological change. The volume can be read both as a state-of-the-art report of research in the field and as a manual of Romance languages with special emphasis on the key topics of phonetics and phonology.

In diesem Band wird eine Varietät des Haiti-Kreols, das sogenannte "Samaná-Kreyòl", als Teil der komplexen, triglossischen Kontaktsituation zwischen Kreol, Spanisch und Englisch auf der Halbinsel Samaná in der Dominikanischen Republik beschrieben. Diese Diaspora- bzw. Migrationsvarietät wird seit Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts auf Samaná gesprochen. Es handelt sich hierbei um die erste und möglicherweise einzige Dokumentation dieser stark bedrohten und ausschließlich mündlich überlieferten Sprache, deren systematische Beschreibung insbesondere in Hinblick auf die Gefahr ihres baldigen Verschwindens eine besondere Dringlichkeit aufweist. Auf der Grundlage eines umfangreichen Korpus erfolgt die Analyse anhand von Modellen der (historischen) Migrationslinguistik und der Forschung zu Sprachkontakt und Sprachminderheiten sowie zum sogenannten Sprachtod. Durch die Beschreibung der archaischen Charakteristika der Migrationsvarietät können außerdem interessante Rückschlüsse auf frühere Sprachstufen des Haiti-Kreols gezogen werden, womit die Arbeit darüber hinaus einen Beitrag für ein besseres und vor allem empirisch begründetes Verständnis der Geschichte dieser Kreolsprache leistet.

Der Band behandelt in neun Beiträgen die nationalistisch bedingten Ausbauprozesse einer Reihe romanischer Regionalsprachen und Varietäten dies- und jenseits des Atlantiks aus komparatistischer Sicht. Im ersten, synchron ausgerichteten Teil werden sechs Regionalsprachen – Katalanisch, Galicisch, Friaulisch, Sardisch, Korsisch und Okzitanisch – in den drei großen Ländern der europäischen Romania – Spanien, Italien und Frankreich – im Hinblick auf die sprachpolitischen Akteure, Präsenz in der wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation sowie bestimmte Aspekte der Normierung systematisch miteinander verglichen. Im zweiten, diachron ausgerichteten Teil wird der Fokus zunächst auf einzelne ausgewählte Regionalsprachen der europäischen Romania – das Dalmatische Ragusas und Galicisch – gelegt. Der transatlantische Vergleich europäischer und amerikanischer Sprachvarietäten am Beispiel des argentinischen Spanisch sowie des Galicischen und des Katalanischen in den entsprechenden Regionen des Spanischen Kolonialreiches im 19. Jahrhundert stellt eine weitere methodologische Dimension des Bandes dar. Zum Schluss wird eine dritte komparatistische Dimension erschlossen, und zwar die des inneramerikanischen romanistischen Vergleichs von Spracheinstellungen in Hispanoamerika, Brasilien und Frankokanada im 19.
